{"id":397280,"date":"2026-04-17T16:37:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T16:37:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/397280\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T16:37:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T16:37:08","slug":"the-strad-news-new-york-exhibition-to-explore-relationship-between-instruments-and-the-body","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/397280\/","title":{"rendered":"The Strad News &#8211; New York exhibition to explore relationship between instruments and the body"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestrad.com\/news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Read more news stories here<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A new exhibition focusing on the relationship between musical instruments and the human body will open at New York\u2019s Metropolitan Museum of Art on 7 June. \u2018Musical Bodies\u2019 will bring together around 130 works from around the world, from instruments to paintings, sculptures and drawings from the museum\u2019s collection along with several international loans.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The exhibition will include a number of stringed instruments, including Antonio Stradivari\u2019s 1693 \u2018Gould\u2019 violin, named after George Gould who gave it to the museum in 1955. Other highlights include a number of pochettes \u2013 small, narrow instruments designed to fit into the pocket of a dancer master or a travelling musician. There is also a \u2018division viol\u2019 (two or three inches shorter than a normal viola da gamba), made by English maker Richard Meares around 1680, and an unusual viola d\u2019amore pochette from the 18th century, and a 1726 \u2018English violet\u2019 made by German luthier Paulus Alletsee.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Musical Bodies first formed in my mind as a deceptively simple question: Why are so many instruments shaped and decorated like the human body?\u2019 said Bradley Strauchen-Scherer, curator in the museum\u2019s Department of Musical Instruments. \u2018The quest for an answer has become an exploration of humanity through the lens of instruments and music. We find ourselves represented in these instruments because, for much of our history, music has been central to who we are and what we do.
