{"id":399110,"date":"2026-04-18T19:04:17","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T19:04:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/399110\/"},"modified":"2026-04-18T19:04:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T19:04:17","slug":"metformin-may-protect-against-oesophageal-carcinoma-emj","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/399110\/","title":{"rendered":"Metformin May Protect Against Oesophageal Carcinoma \u2013 EMJ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emjreviews.com\/general-healthcare\/news\/metformin-hidden-brain-pathway-to-lower-blood-sugar-revealed\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">METFORMIN<\/a>\u00a0has been associated with\u00a036% lower odds of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.emjreviews.com\/gastroenterology\/news\/candida-infection-a-significant-risk-factor-for-oesophageal-cancer-in-achalasia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma<\/a>\u00a0(OSCC)\u00a0in a 2026\u00a0Nordic\u00a0population-based case-control\u00a0study.1\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The preventative potential\u00a0of the common diabetes drug\u00a0was more noticeable\u00a0in\u00a0those prescribed higher\u00a0dosages.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Metformin Use and Lower Odds of\u00a0OSCC\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Data was collected from Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) between 1994 and 2023.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Researchers analysed\u00a0more than 13,000\u00a0people\u00a0diagnosed with\u00a0OSCC during the relevant period, with a median age of 70-years-old. Each\u00a0patient was compared with 10 times as many control participants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Metformin use was associated with 36% lower odds of\u00a0OSCC compared with non-use.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Underlying Pathways Behind the Association\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0decrease in\u00a0OSCC risk\u00a0is unlikely to be due to any association with diabetes itself because diabetes is not known to\u00a0decrease the odds of\u00a0OSCC,2\u00a0researchers\u00a0highlighted.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead,\u00a0the primary pathway is thought to be through metformin\u2019s activation of AMP-activated protein kinase and\u00a0its inhibition of the mechanistic target of\u00a0rapamycin\u00a0inhibitor-signalling pathway.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0ultimately leads\u00a0to the suppression of cell growth,\u00a0promotion of apoptosis, and regulation of autophagy, authors said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Could Metformin be Used in\u00a0OSCC Prevention and Treatment?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Researchers\u00a0highlighted\u00a0the possible role of metformin in\u00a0OSCC treatment, with findings\u00a0also\u00a0providing\u00a0the\u00a0foundation for\u00a0investigations into\u00a0its use\u00a0as a\u00a0preventative\u00a0option\u00a0in high-risk populations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not only that, but they pointed to\u00a0future investigations into the use of metformin after treatment for\u00a0OSCC, calling for an analysis as to\u00a0whether it would improve survival rates.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Suggestions were brought forward in the context of metformin\u2019s strong safety profile, wide availability, and low cost.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>References\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>1\u00a0Xie S-H et al.
