Mother’s Milk has been a key member of The Boys<\/a>‘<\/a> cast of characters since the very beginning, which is why it’s so easy to tell that he is completely different in the show’s fifth and final season. MM and Butcher have always been pitted against each other as ideological opponents, with them both taking completely different moral approaches to their shared goal of taking down supes. Season 5, however, has seen MM’s personality and worldview get a lot closer to Butcher’s, something that has fans worried as The Boys approaches its series finale.<\/p>\n

When we first see MM in season 5<\/a>, he is imprisoned in one of Homelander’s freedom camps alongside Hughie and Frenchie. Unlike Hughie and Frenchie, who plan on escaping the camp, MM has instead resorted to fighting other prisoners for money. Although MM still helps the other Boys make Molotov cocktails, he seems to have lost his way as a result of his time in the camp. Thus, it is hard to tell if MM has truly lost his way, or if his true self will be able to come back before The Boys ends.<\/p>\n

The Boys’ “Freedom Camp Year” Affected MM More Than Anyone Else<\/p>\n

Of the three members of the Boys<\/a> who were imprisoned in a freedom camp, MM was easily the most affected. Throughout the first three episodes of season 5, MM can be seen heavily drinking. He has a bottle in hand in almost every scene, something that wasn’t typically associated with the character in the past. MM is also a lot more negative, seeming more cynical about the team’s chances of taking Vought down than he usually is. This is in stark contrast to the MM from past seasons, especially in season 3, where Soldier Boy’s presence makes him more determined than ever to get revenge on the supes.<\/p>\n

MM’s cynicism, heavy drinking, and ruder demeanor make him seem a lot more like the character who used to be his ideological opposite: Butcher. MM isn’t pushing back against Butcher’s plan to genocide the supes nearly as hard as he normally does, hinting that he may go along with the plan when push comes to shove. Frenchie has always been mostly on board with the virus, and Hughie has always been against it, positions that weren’t changed by the freedom camp. MM has had the biggest change in position as a result of his freedom camp tenure, and it’ll be interesting to see other ways in which he reflects Butcher as the season goes on.<\/p>\n

The Boys season 5 begins a year after the conclusion of season 4, raising questions about exactly what happened to each character in the interim.<\/p>\n

The Real MM Is Still In There Somewhere<\/p>\n

While MM has taken a turn for the worse in season 5, the real him is still in there somewhere. This is shown in episode 2, through MM’s encounter with Countess Crow. The Boys originally planned to go to the Teenage Kix mansion<\/a> and use the virus to kill Rock-Hard, with him being the guinea pig to see whether the virus works. When it comes time to use the virus, Soldier Boy and Jetstreak are there, meaning that The Boys have to kill two more supes than they originally planned.<\/p>\n

However, MM finds a fourth supe in the mansion: Countess Crow. Although he is initially worried, MM becomes sympathetic after talking to her. MM realizes that Countess is just a kid, and she doesn’t really want to be an influencer. So, rather than allowing her to die, MM helps get her out of the mansion under Butcher’s nose.<\/p>\n

Butcher would have never let a supe escape with knowledge of the virus, showing the major difference that MM and Butcher still have. MM’s interaction with Countess Crow is more like the character that we know and love, showing that he is still in there somewhere, even if The Boys season 5 has changed him a lot.<\/p>\n
