Morgan Neville reveals why Pete Davidson does not appear in the new Lorne Michaels documentary. The director says scheduling conflicts and an overflow of material kept Davidson out of the film. Neville told PEOPLE<\/a> that after interviewing John Mulaney, the project simply felt complete.<\/p>\n \u201cI interviewed so many people for the film, and at a certain point, after I\u2019d interviewed [John] Mulaney and he had said everything he had said, I just didn\u2019t know where we were gonna put more voices,\u201d Neville said. \u201cIt just felt like it was full, you know?\u201d Davidson served as an SNL cast member from 2014 to 2022. He has previously described Michaels as a formative mentor and father figure in his life.<\/p>\n Neville also confirmed that Davidson had scheduling conflicts when production began on the documentary. The director recalled not knowing \u201cwhere anything\u2019s gonna fit\u201d with so many SNL alumni eager to participate. Lorne features interviews with Tina Fey, Chris Rock, Jimmy Fallon, Conan O\u2019Brien, Maya Rudolph, and Andy Samberg.<\/p>\n \u201cThat was the hard part,\u201d Neville said. \u201cIt was like an embarrassment of riches, that you could interview a thousand people about Lorne Michaels. So many people have stories.\u201d The filmmaker focused on keeping the documentary centered on Michaels rather than the many celebrities surrounding him. \u201cI was just trying to distill his essence into a film,\u201d he explained. \u201cA lot of those stories are not about Lorne, they\u2019re about those people.\u201d<\/p>\n Mulaney opens up in the film about Michaels\u2019 supporting him during his 2020 rehab stint. The executive producer offered to \u201cstay on the phone with him\u201d for as long as needed.
