\u201cI got some heat because I did a photo shoot with Jordan, and Jordan asked me something about being a [Taylor Swift fan], and I was like, \u2018Oh no, I\u2019m definitely not a Swiftie,\u2019\u201d he says. He meant it as neither judgement nor critique. But on the internet, simple, honest opinions about the type of music you like are not allowed. \u201cAll of a sudden it garnered this, \u2018Fuck him! He\u2019s a monster! Destroy him! He\u2019s short! He hates her because he\u2019s short!\u2019 [He is five feet five.] \u201cIt\u2019s just like, whoa! I think she\u2019s great. Her music is not my kind of music. That is why I don\u2019t want to be online,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t need that energy,\u201d he adds, of internet idolatry. Being a TikTok star doesn\u2019t lend itself to his brand of acting, anyway. \u201cIt\u2019s counterintuitive to my job, because if people know you more, you can\u2019t disappear into characters. They see you as, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s Josh.\u2019 You know what I mean? So, if you\u2019re a fucking meme, people know you for the meme.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hutcherson has had his fair share of that. He\u2019s the (begrudging) face of many a meme. Some he doesn\u2019t mind. Others, he thinks, are pretty stupid\u2014like the one from Hunger Games, where Mellark, a baker, inexplicably paints himself to camouflage into a rock. The whole scene is silly, he says. It should be noted, he did raise his concerns at the time. \u201cI was like, \u2018Look, I know this dude\u2019s a baker, but how is he doing this? Baking sourdough is not painting. How the fuck did he do that?\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cWhy didn\u2019t someone stop it? There are so many people who could have stopped it. They let it happen to me. I just lay there.\u201d<\/p>\n

That moment aside, it\u2019s clear he still has a lot of love for The Hunger Games. There are actors who spend their entire careers trying to distance themselves from the franchise that made them\u2014 Hutcherson isn\u2019t one of them. Not only does the series mean a lot to him, but he also recognizes how much it means to everyone else.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could talk all day about Hunger Games,\u201d he says. \u201cI think [they] are amazing books. They\u2019re fantastic movies. They stand for something important and real, especially in today\u2019s world. The themes of authoritarianism and overpowering violent governments are very present. They didn\u2019t listen to The Hunger Games.\u201d<\/p>\n
