On World Liver Day, observed under the theme \u201cSolid Habits, Strong Liver,\u201d the Pakistan Medical Association expressed concern over the increasing burden of liver-related diseases in Pakistan.<\/p>\n
High Burden of Hepatitis<\/p>\n
According to PMA Secretary General Abdul Ghafoor Shoro, Pakistan carries one of the highest burdens of viral hepatitis globally.<\/p>\n
He said an estimated 13.8 to 15 million people in the country are living with Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C. Of these, around 9.8 to 10 million cases are linked to Hepatitis C alone.<\/p>\n
Additionally, approximately 3.8 to 4 million people are affected by chronic Hepatitis B.<\/p>\n
Low Awareness and Rising Risks<\/p>\n
Health experts noted that only 25 to 30 per cent of infected individuals are aware of their condition, highlighting a major gap in screening and diagnosis.<\/p>\n
Each year, nearly 37,000 deaths occur due to complications such as liver cirrhosis and liver cancer.<\/p>\n
The PMA also pointed to the growing prevalence of Metabolically Dysregulated-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease, linked to unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles.<\/p>\n
Call for Preventive Measures<\/p>\n
The association urged the public to adopt healthier habits, including reducing the consumption of processed foods, sugary drinks, and oily diets, while increasing physical activity.<\/p>\n
Experts also emphasized the importance of safe medical practices, such as using screened blood for transfusions and sterilized equipment, to prevent infections.<\/p>\n
Need for Healthcare Reforms<\/p>\n
The PMA called on the government to improve healthcare infrastructure, expand diagnostic facilities, and ensure the availability of treatment across all provinces.<\/p>\n
It also urged regular screenings, vaccinations, and public awareness campaigns to address the growing health challenge.<\/p>\n
