April 20 (Reuters) – Apple<\/a> on Monday named insider John Ternus as its next CEO, tasking the longtime hardware chief with steering \u200cthe company after Tim Cook as the iPhone maker prepares \u200cfor industrywide shifts driven by artificial intelligence<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The leadership change marks the end of an era \u200bat one of the world’s most iconic companies, just as rivals bet on products that use AI to loosen Apple’s grip on the consumer electronics market.<\/p>\n

Here are some key facts about Ternus:<\/p>\n

LONGTIME VETERAN<\/p>\n

Ternus joined Apple’s product design \u200cteam in 2001 and \u2060became a vice president of hardware engineering in 2013.<\/p>\n

He joined the firm’s executive team in 2021, when he took \u2060on his current role of senior vice president of hardware engineering, reporting to Cook.<\/p>\n

HARDWARE ENGINEERING BETS<\/p>\n

Ternus has overseen some of Apple’s most consequential hardware bets \u200bin recent \u200byears, including the teams behind the \u200biPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch \u200cand AirPods.<\/p>\n

He has played a key role in reigniting sales of products such as Apple’s Mac computers, which have gained market share in recent years.<\/p>\n

IPHONE REVAMP<\/p>\n

Ternus most recently showed the company’s iPhone Air last fall, the biggest revamp of the iPhone since 2017.<\/p>\n

APPLE HANDS REINS TO TERNUS<\/p>\n

Ternus will \u200ctake over as Apple CEO on September \u200b1, succeeding Cook – who has led Apple \u200bsince 2011 and will become \u200bthe company’s executive chairman.<\/p>\n

Ternus, 50, is the same age \u200cas Cook when he took over \u200bthe reins as CEO \u200bfrom co-founder Steve Jobs in 2011.<\/p>\n

He will also join Apple’s board effective September 1.<\/p>\n

EARLY CAREER<\/p>\n

Before Apple, Ternus worked as a mechanical \u200bengineer at Virtual Research \u200cSystems. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the \u200bUniversity of Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n
