Have we gotten a little entitled when it comes to location data? It wasn\u2019t that long ago when we\u2019d have to print out turn-by-turn directions and pay very close attention to where we were if we wanted to navigate anywhere \u2014 and now, we get nervous when we don\u2019t have a GPS satellite lock<\/a> pinpointing our location down a meter or two. If you find yourself in that same location-anxiety group, we sure hope you\u2019re not rocking a Pixel phone, as a large number of users report a variety of problems concerning the quality of their GPS data.<\/p>\n Don\u2019t want to miss the best from Android Authority?<\/p>\n GPS problems in general are hardly anything new, and we don\u2019t infrequently hear a few reports about a new phone running into some problems consistently achieving a nice, accurate GPS lock. Even Pixel hardware isn\u2019t immune to complaints like those \u2014 but it sure feels like they\u2019re blowing up all over the place with Google\u2019s latest handsets.<\/p>\n Over the past few months, we\u2019ve identified dozens of reports across Google\u2019s own Pixel community forums (like this post from Matt Adamski<\/a>) and Reddit\u2019s Pixel sub alike (such as this one from Last_Ad1873<\/a>), all describing inconsistent, poor-quality GPS location data \u2014 and the lion\u2019s share of it on Pixel 10 handsets.<\/p>\n Are you having problems with erratic GPS location data?<\/p>\n 155 votes<\/p>\n Yes, on my Pixel 10.<\/p>\n 42%<\/p>\n Yes, on my older Pixel phone.<\/p>\n 28%<\/p>\n Yes, on another Android device.<\/p>\n 3%<\/p>\n Nope, no problems here!<\/p>\n 26%<\/p>\n So, what could be the problem here? Well, it\u2019s possible that we\u2019re looking at an issue with Pixel GPS receiver hardware or the software that controls it. It\u2019s also possible that this isn\u2019t specifically a Pixel 10 problem at all, and could stem from some system-level Android change \u2014 like maybe that density-based coarse location system<\/a> that debuted in Android 16?<\/p>\n Maybe the most frustrating thing about this issue is that it doesn\u2019t break GPS support entirely \u2014 if location data just weren\u2019t available, users would be returning their phones in droves. But with the glitches these users describe, the phone does show location data \u2014 it just erratically jumps around, producing incorrect direction and speed estimates as a result. That means we may have significantly more affected users who don\u2019t even realize that this experience isn\u2019t normal.<\/p>\n Right now, we\u2019ve reached out to Google to see if it\u2019s aware of these reports, if it has a better idea what might be causing the problem, and \u2014 maybe most importantly \u2014 if it has any advice for affected users.
