\n It\u2019s standard practice for Federal Reserve officials to steer clear of politics and \u201cstay in their lane,\u201d as Kevin Warsh, President Donald Trump\u2019s Fed chair nominee, described it Tuesday at his confirmation hearing.<\/a>\n <\/p>\n

\n That lane is intended for managing the economy by setting interest rates at levels to fulfill the central bank\u2019s congressional mandate for stable prices and maximum employment.\n <\/p>\n

\n Yet when senators on the banking committee pressed Warsh on topics well within his lane, like what\u2019s driving inflation, he left his views vague. That isn\u2019t incidental. It reflects Warsh\u2019s broader push to rethink how Fed officials broadcast their views on the economy and the path of interest rates.\n <\/p>\n

\n Asked whether he agreed with several Fed officials who\u2019ve recently said they believe higher tariffs Trump enacted are driving prices higher, Warsh said simply, \u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n But he then complicated that certainty by arguing that the government\u2019s standard inflation gauges don\u2019t fully capture what\u2019s happening in the economy \u2014 and that, if confirmed, he would push to rethink how inflation is measured altogether.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI want to know what inflation really is,\u201d he said, adding that \u201cthere\u2019s some work to do\u201d on how it\u2019s calculated.\n <\/p>\n

\n Then, when asked whether he believed a rate cut eight times the size of a typical move by the Fed could cause prices to spike, Warsh responded, \u201cUnlike many of my colleagues past and present, I don\u2019t believe in forward guidance.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI don\u2019t believe that I should be previewing for you what a future decision might be,\u201d he told lawmakers.\n <\/p>\n

\n That marks a stark departure<\/a> from steps the central bank has taken in recent years to communicate more with the public on past and future monetary policy decisions.\n <\/p>\n

\n The rationale was that the better the public understands how central bankers arrive at decisions, often through providing what\u2019s commonly referred to as \u201cforward guidance,\u201d the easier it is to achieve policy objectives.\n <\/p>\n

\n That\u2019s because markets will have already priced in the next possible move, making it easier for the Fed to introduce policy updates. Surprising the markets can have the opposite effect. And there\u2019s solid research<\/a> that backs that up.\n <\/p>\n

\n That said, Warsh still gave forward-looking guidance in his testimony.\n <\/p>\n

\n He highlighted how he believes advancements in AI will make it easier for the central bank to keep rates lower, since productivity gains can drive economic growth without causing inflation.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe simple act of saying you\u2019re going to cut for \u2018x\u2019 reason is in fact forward guidance,\u201d Wells Fargo economists wrote.\n <\/p>\n

\n If Warsh is confirmed as Fed chair, he may have the authority to do away with press conferences, reduce the frequency of the high-profile, closely watched monetary policy meetings \u2014 which he has already hinted at \u2014 and limit his own speaking engagements.\n <\/p>\n

\n One thing he won\u2019t be able to escape, however, is answering to Congress.
