While HBO Max has a lot of big shows, the streaming service is set to change its reputation forever—for better or worse—with the arrival of its biggest and most ambitious project ever. HBO occupies a unique place in the annals of TV history. Launched in the early ‘70s, the cable network first became a cultural force to be reckoned during the late ‘90s. Admittedly, earlier network hits like The X-Files, Homicide: Life on the Street, and Twin Peaks helped usher in the Second Golden Age of Television.

However, it was HBO’s prestige TV shows of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s that set the era in stone. By the time The Sopranos finale aired in 2007, hits like Sex and the City, The Wire, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Deadwood, Band of Brothers, and Six Feet Under had defined the Prestige TV blueprint. Without them, the likes of Mad Men and Breaking Bad would never have come into existence, let alone later critical phenomenons like Netflix’s BoJack Horseman or House of Cards.

While this means that HBO remains one of the foremost voices in mature content for adult audiences, the network and its streaming service, HBO Max, are not known for being family-friendly. On the contrary, one of the biggest innovations of shows like The Sopranos and Sex and the City was their frank, unapologetic, and extremely explicit content, which would have never been seen on network TV. The success of Game of Thrones further cemented HBO’s reputation as a uniquely grown-up entertainment giant, and its biggest show ever, the upcoming Harry Potter series, is about to change that completely.

HBO Max’s Harry Potter Series Will Be Its Biggest Show Ever

"Dominic

To be fair, there are a handful of kids’ programs on HBO Max, from Sesame Street to Looney Tunes cartoons and Adventure Time. However, the streaming service is unambiguously targeted at adult viewers, or at least, it has traditionally been aimed at adult consumers rather than family audiences. Even HBO Max’s risible Scooby-Doo spinoff Velma was the franchise’s first R-rated outing, in what feels like a parodic exaggeration of just how pointedly adult HBO’s reputation is. Now, however, this will all have to change.

HBO’s Harry Potter series, which is set to be one of the most expensive TV shows of all time, will be the biggest HBO/HBO Max original in the history of the cable network. While Game of Thrones became the biggest show in the world during its eight-season run, rivaled only by the meteoric popularity of The Big Bang Theory, author George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire saga was nowhere near as big as the Harry Potter novel series when the show began. In fact, it took a year or two for Game of Thrones to win over the mainstream.

Harry Potter Could Be A Mixed Blessing For HBO Max

"Dominic

Like The Big Bang Theory, the show was successful in its first season, but became a massive hit by its third year, and boasted one of the biggest TV audiences of the 21st century in its final seasons. In contrast, Harry Potter’s HBO Max show is already bigger than Game of Thrones since the series is based on some of the bestselling books of all time. Thus, the Harry Potter show will almost certainly become the face of HBO and HBO Max when the series is released.

Currently, Game of Thrones and its spinoffs, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, are arguably the most recognizable titles associated with the HBO brand. However, after decades of honing its reputation as a home for mature drama with little censorship, HBO will radically rebrand itself with the release of this incredibly expensive family-friendly franchise reboot. Only time will tell whether HBO’s Harry Potter show will make the brand bigger than ever or tarnish its status as a home for grown-up viewing.
