(Image credit: Rocket Lab)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0a80d1c7-37c6-4b89-ab76-d6468b71cfd0\">&#8220;Kakuchin Rising&#8221; is the second of two contracted Electron missions for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency&#8217;s (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22672-japan-aerospace-exploration-agency.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22672-japan-aerospace-exploration-agency.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22672-japan-aerospace-exploration-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">JAXA<\/a>) Innovative Satellite Technology Demonstration Program.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0a80d1c7-37c6-4b89-ab76-d6468b71cfd0-1\">The first such flight, which Rocket Lab called &#8220;RAISE and Shine,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/rocket-lab-launch-japanese-technology-demonstrating-satellite-raise-and-shine\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/rocket-lab-launch-japanese-technology-demonstrating-satellite-raise-and-shine\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/rocket-lab-launch-japanese-technology-demonstrating-satellite-raise-and-shine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">occurred last December<\/a>. It sent JAXA&#8217;s Rapid Innovative payload demonstration Satellite-4, known as RAISE-4, to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a> to test a variety of technologies.<\/p>\n<p>The eight satellites flying on &#8220;Kakuchin Rising&#8221; are a diverse bunch. They include &#8220;educational smallsats, an ocean monitoring <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">satellite<\/a>, a demonstration satellite for ultra-small multispectral cameras, and a deployable antenna that can be packed tightly using origami folding techniques and unfurled to 25 times its size,&#8221; Rocket Lab wrote in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/rocketlabcorp.com\/missions\/launches\/kakushin-rising\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/rocketlabcorp.com\/missions\/launches\/kakushin-rising\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">mission description<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-6fd9b5fc-2100-4b1a-ba08-4d668bc1b6d7\">&#8220;Kakuchin Rising&#8221; was the 79th launch to date for the 59-foot-tall (18-meter-tall) Electron, which gives small satellites dedicated rides to Earth orbit and beyond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>Rocket Lab also flies missions to and from suborbital space using a modified version of Electron called <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/rocket-lab-haste-hypersonic-launch-dart-ae-scramjet-us-military\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/rocket-lab-haste-hypersonic-launch-dart-ae-scramjet-us-military\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/rocket-lab-haste-hypersonic-launch-dart-ae-scramjet-us-military\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HASTE<\/a>.
