Taking my trash out and going down and up one flight of stairs [felt] like I was in the Olympics.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">She decided she&#8217;d had enough: &#8216;I knew that that was not a body I wanted to be living in anymore.&#8217; <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Adjusting key aspects of her health included reassessing her nutrition and finding a complementary exercise routine. However, Kaylah opted for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/walking\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/walking\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"walking\" data-node-id=\"17.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">walking<\/a> over a &#8216;crazy paid programme&#8217; or hiring a PT \u2013 here&#8217;s how it helped her lose nearly 73kg. <\/p>\n<p>1. Walking is manageable at any fitness starting point<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Between sitting and walking to the shower or front door, Kaylah&#8217;s day usually involved little movement. &#8216;My day was probably 500 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a64473094\/10k-steps-desk-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a64473094\/10k-steps-desk-job\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"steps\" data-node-id=\"24.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">steps<\/a>,&#8217; she noted. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">She therefore started with a baseline of half an hour of walking. &#8216;Thirty minutes was extremely hard at first,&#8217; she said. &#8216;When you are so big, just carrying your body weight around [while] walking is exhausting, as if you&#8217;re doing 30 minutes of running on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/gym-wear\/g32608079\/best-treadmills\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/gym-wear\/g32608079\/best-treadmills\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"treadmill\" data-node-id=\"28.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">treadmill<\/a>.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Walking allowed her to set achievable targets. &#8216;Right now I don&#8217;t have a step count goal. I&#8217;m not even thinking about 10k steps per day,&#8217; she recalled. &#8216;I&#8217;m thinking, &#8220;I&#8217;m going to keep on doing this until it doesn&#8217;t hurt after five minutes, until I feel like I could have walked more.&#8221;&#8216;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"37\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">It became easier, which kept her going: &#8216;I remember that day when I finally started getting those steps up and stopped walking because my break was over, [not because] I felt like I just ran a marathon. I felt energised.&#8217; <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"41\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Within weeks, she went from struggling to walk a few minutes to moving comfortably for longer. &#8216;After about a month, I was walking for at least 45 minutes to an hour,&#8217; she said. <\/p>\n<p>2. It fits easily into your daily routine<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"46\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8216;When we think of exercise \u2013 especially as big people \u2013 we think of high-intensity sweating, heart-pumping, can-barely-move-after movement,&#8217; Kaylah explained. &#8216;It does not take that. I started walking 30 minutes a day on my lunch break.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"50\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">At the time, she was working in a call centre, but from home, which was &#8216;extremely emotionally taxing and draining&#8217;. She then decided to use her 30 minutes to &#8216;do anything besides sit there and dread getting back&#8217;, and started walking instead. &#8216;I was simply walking around my apartment complex parking lot.&#8217; She was therefore able to fit the habit in alongside her working schedule. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"54\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">If physically walking outside isn&#8217;t an option, Kaylah pointed out that chores can be an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a69120350\/kate-garraway-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a69120350\/kate-garraway-health\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"efficient choice\" data-node-id=\"54.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">efficient choice<\/a>. &#8216;Clean that sink out. Scrub that tub out. Wash those walls. It&#8217;s an accessible way to start moving<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"60\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Kaylah didn&#8217;t require a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a705924\/best-gyms-in-london\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a705924\/best-gyms-in-london\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"gym\" data-node-id=\"60.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">gym<\/a>, equipment or money \u2013 just the willingness to step outside. &#8216;I was not going around the block, walking on a treadmill, or using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a41964659\/best-walking-pads\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a41964659\/best-walking-pads\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"walking pad\" data-node-id=\"60.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">walking pad<\/a>,&#8217; she said. Finances especially needn&#8217;t be a limiting factor. &#8216;Pads can cost [up to \u00a31200], but you don&#8217;t need it.&#8217; A free app on her phone was enough to track her steps. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"64\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">As for feelings of self-consciousness, she reminded viewers to value improvements in key health markers over the discomfort of unwanted stares, as difficult as that might be. &#8216;[Someone else is] not going to get you to lower blood pressure or from diabetic to non-diabetic,&#8217; she reminded. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"68\" class=\"body-text css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">If the embarrassment became too much, she advised starting off with walking inside or just a short way: &#8216;Walk around your apartment or complex, or one way up the block and one way back. You don&#8217;t have to go long distances.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>4. Walking is low impact and safe for injuries<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"86\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Walking allowed Kaylah to move without making her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a61983272\/pilates-joint-pain\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a61983272\/pilates-joint-pain\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"joint\" data-node-id=\"86.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">joint<\/a> pain and limited mobility worse. &#8216;I had knee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/sports-injuries\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/sports-injuries\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"injuries\" data-node-id=\"86.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">injuries<\/a>, as I&#8217;ve dislocated them playing volleyball,&#8217; she said. It improves your mental health <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"92\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Moving and having time away from stressors helped restore Kayla&#8217;s energy and overall emotional wellbeing. &#8216;I was in a studio apartment the size of a box,&#8217; she said, &#8216;working at a call centre wreaking havoc on my mental health, and I wasn&#8217;t getting any light.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"96\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Her weight was also an unyielding source of frustration. &#8216;When I was morbidly obese, I did not even feel alive,&#8217; she lamented. &#8216;Getting outside and walking, feeling the sun, [I felt like] a human and a working member of society.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>7. It builds habits that compound over time<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"101\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Small daily walks turned into higher step counts, more movement, and lasting lifestyle change. &#8216;I remember the first day I saw that 10k,&#8217; she said, reflecting on her progress. &#8216;I actually hit that today. I&#8217;ve probably walked the whole length of Long Beach, California. There are days now where I&#8217;ve hit 25,000 or 30,000 steps.
