It was an incredible feat of endurance, and a reminder that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Now, though, after completing a strict course of physiotherapy and a very gradual return to exercise, Cox&#8217;s workout routine is about building fitness and strength for both performance and longevity. It\u2019s a balanced, realistic approach that we could all learn from. Blaze classes are billed as &#8216;all-levels&#8217;, but try a shorter at-home <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a707801\/hiit-workout-at-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a707801\/hiit-workout-at-home\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"HIIT workout\" data-node-id=\"20.7\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">HIIT workout<\/a> if you&#8217;ve never done the style of workout before.<\/p>\n<p>Strength training<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">In the same interview with Good Housekeeping, Cox revealed that she regularly weight trains. \u2018It\u2019s really important for women to do strength training a couple of times a week if they can,\u2019 she said, adding that she \u2018goes to the gym a few times a week, even if I\u2019m super busy.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"32\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">On her road to recovery post-challenge, she worked with physio Nick Worth and leading sports scientist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/profgregw\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/profgregw\/?hl=en\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Professor Greg Whyte\" data-node-id=\"32.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Professor Greg Whyte<\/a>. Resistance work was a big part of her return to exercise, but starting small was key. \u2018Barely any weight and low reps,\u2019 Cox wrote in a post on Instagram documenting her workout in November 2025. \u2018But good to be (kinda) back.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"37\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Research consistently shows that strength training is one of the most effective ways for women in their 50s and beyond to protect health, function and independence. When asked what she recommends to other women, she answered: \u2018Move more! Get out, walk the dog, eat well.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"47\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Dog walking is a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/fat-loss\/a36287384\/neat-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/fat-loss\/a36287384\/neat-exercise\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"NEAT exercise\" data-node-id=\"47.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NEAT exercise<\/a>. Standing for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, it\u2019s a form of movement you do that isn\u2019t planned exercise, and makes up significantly more of your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure \u2013 how many calories you burn across each day), compared to the time you spend exercising in a gym or doing a planned workout. NEAT makes up 50% of your TDEE, while a planned workout typically counts for around 10%. Dog walking, like Cox, is a great example. Good Morning Britain host <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a69120350\/kate-garraway-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a69120350\/kate-garraway-health\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Kate Garraway is also a big advocate of NEAT exercise\" data-node-id=\"47.5\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kate Garraway is also a big advocate of NEAT exercise<\/a>, with her go-to form being gardening. Other examples include playing with your children, using a standing desk, or washing the car. <\/p>\n<p>Taking the stairs<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"52\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">A second form of NEAT movement for Cox is taking the stairs over the lift or escalator. She told Good Housekeeping she does this specifically at work since \u2018we\u2019re on the eighth floor at new Broadcasting House.\u2019 Like dog walking or gardening, it\u2019s about building more movement into your day \u2013 without relying on structured workouts.<\/p>\n<p>Horse riding<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"58\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">If you&#8217;re one of Cox\u2019s 662k Instagram followers, you&#8217;ll know she\u2019s a keen horse rider. She regularly posts videos of her riding, and there\u2019s a solid (and growing) body of research showing that it can be particularly beneficial for women in their 50s and beyond. Some show it enhances both static and dynamic balance, others show it <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0031512517736463\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0031512517736463\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"significantly strengthens your core\" data-node-id=\"58.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">significantly strengthens your core<\/a> as it requires constant micro-adjustments to stay upright on a moving animal, and one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-bond-for-life-pets\/pet-owners\/horses-have-heart\/6-health-benefits-of-horses\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-bond-for-life-pets\/pet-owners\/horses-have-heart\/6-health-benefits-of-horses\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"58.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> shows even light-to-moderate riding of 30 minutes counts as meaningful aerobic activity, supporting heart health without the joint impact of other high-intensity cardio.
