Life has gotten a lot more expensive since 1990. While average Social Security benefits have significantly increased in the past 36 years, they might not stretch as far.<\/p>\n

In 1990, the average estimated monthly Social Security<\/a> retirement benefit was $602.56, according to the Social Security Administration<\/a> (SSA). As of January 2026, this would equate to $1,538.33, with inflation, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics\u2019 Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation calculator<\/a>. In January 2026, the estimated average monthly Social Security retirement benefit was $2,071, according to the SSA<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The average car uses 433 gallons of gas<\/a> per year \u2014 approximately 36 gallons per month \u2014 according to the U.S. Department of Energy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In September 1990 \u2014 the first month data is available \u2014 gas cost an average of $1.26 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration<\/a> (EIA). Given this, fuel costs likely averaged $45.36 per month in 1990 dollars.<\/p>\n

When calculated with inflation<\/a>, this would be $3.09 per gallon \u2014 $111.24 per month \u2014 in January 2026 dollars, according to the CPI inflation calculator.<\/p>\n

Gas cost an average of $2.81 per gallon in January 2026, according to the EIA<\/a>. Which means average fuel costs<\/a> of $101.16 per month.<\/p>\n

Rent<\/p>\n

In 1990, the median monthly rent was $374, according to the U.S. Census Bureau<\/a>. When inflation is added in, this equates to $954.82 in January 2026 dollars, according to the inflation calculator.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, housing costs<\/a> have surged over the past three decades. As of March 2026, the average rent in the U.S. is $1,627 per month, according to Apartments.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Food<\/p>\n

In 1990, food spending totaled an average of $2,100 per year \u2014 i.e., $175 per month \u2014 in households where the head of household was over 64 years old, according to the United States Department of Agriculture<\/a> (USDA). With inflation, this would be $5,361.30 per year \u2014 as of January 2026 \u2014 or $446.78 per month, according to the inflation calculator.<\/p>\n

As of January 2026, females in the 71-plus age range following a moderate-cost food plan spent an average of $322.10 per month on food at home, according to the USDA<\/a>. Males in this age range and food budget spent $356.70 per month. This means a married couple might spend $678.80 per month on food at home or $8,145.60 per year.<\/p>\n

In 1990, the standard monthly Medicare Part B <\/a>premium was $28.60, according to the SSA<\/a>, Table 2.C1. When inflation is factored in, this would be $73.02 per month in January 2026 dollars, according to the inflation calculator.<\/p>\n

Even when inflation is factored in, Medicare Part B premiums have nearly tripled since 1990. In 2026, the standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B is $202.90, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Crunching the Numbers<\/p>\n

In review, the average estimated monthly Social Security retirement benefit<\/a> was $602.56 in 1990. The expenses above averaged $622.96 per month, creating a $20.40 deficit.<\/p>\n

When inflation is considered, the 1990 average SSA benefit was $1,538.33 per month. Monthly inflation-considered expenses averaged $1,590.62, leaving a shortage of $52.29.<\/p>\n

The January 2026 average Social Security benefit was $2,071 per month. The noted expenses averaged $2,609.86, creating a $538.86 shortfall.<\/p>\n

Clearly, life has gotten significantly more expensive since 1990 \u2014 even when inflation is taken into account.<\/p>\n
