Beyond Paradise has left viewers with a major question this Friday (April 24) evening after Humphrey Goodman was forced into an impossible decision – and the final moments of the penultimate episode have now set up a potentially game-changing move for the cosy crime drama.

Airing on BBC One, the episode saw Kris Marshall’s Humphrey dealing with mounting pressure from his new superior, James Smith, who instructed him to make budget-driven cuts within his team, earlier on in the season.

Instead of confronting the issue head on, Humphrey diverted his attention to a new investigation, involving a violent assault in a rural community living off the grid in the wood, alongside a pair of siblings with a growing list of motives. As the mystery unfolded, Humphrey attempted to keep his secret under wraps as his personal dilemma continued to weigh on him.

But for Humphrey, who is reputed for his aversion towards authority and decision-making, the tension became too much to ignore. In a pivotal scene, he finally confided in Esther (Zahra Ahmadi), Kelby (Dylan Llewellyn) and Margo (Felicity Montagu) about the impossible choice he had been asked to make. Still, he made it clear he could not bring himself to fire any of them.

That same scene set the stage for the episode’s final moments. Tonight’s instalment concluded with a cliffhanger as Humphrey walked into his superior’s office with his decision, and it’s speculated that he could throw in the towel alone to avoid firing anybody. “Still think Humphrey is going to sacrifice his own job,” one viewer notably penned on X.

The situation is complicated by Humphrey’s established relationship with his team, which has been a central part of the series. His bond with his colleagues has made the prospect of choosing between them difficult, reinforcing the possibility of Humphrey resigning to avoid throwing them under the bus.

Speculation has also turned to the future of the series itself, while rumours have suggested that filming for a potential new season could begin in Devon in July 2026. However, nothing has been confirmed by the BBC at this stage.

Speaking to Chris Evans on his Virgin Radio show this Friday, Kris Marshall stated he was still enjoying his time on the show. “I’m really happy where I am at the moment,” he said. “Because I love the show, and I love the storylines. And it’s quite a mad little show, and I love it.”

While he was careful not to give away any plot points, Marshall still teased major drama ahead for his character, with a brief reference to Humphrey’s marriage to Martha, played by Sally Bretton. “Well, I mean, how long can a marriage last?” Marshall said. Still, he quickly added: “I’m kidding, I’m kidding.”

Discussion has also turned to the wider universe surrounding Beyond Paradise. As part of the broader Death in Paradise franchise, possibilities for a crossover are always open. One mention of Dolphin Cove, earlier on in the season, could even be a hint after Zoe (Melina Sinadinou) took Martha’s advice and decided to travel overseas.

Humphrey himself was originally introduced in Death in Paradise before moving to Beyond Paradise, alongside Martha. With professional pressure weighing heavy on him, Humphrey’s resignation could also pave the way for a temporary return to the island of Saint Marie, where he would meet Don Gilet’s DI Mervin Wilson.

For now, however, the focus remains on the unresolved decision left hanging at the end of this Friday’s episode. But whatever the outcome, the cliffhanger has ensured Beyond Paradise’s fourth season ends on one of its most explosive moments yet.

Beyond Paradise continues on Friday, May 1, at 9pm on BBC One.
