Sora<\/a> that aim to generate video from scratch, InterPositive was built to aid human work. <\/p>\nAffleck and his 16-person team (now all at Netflix) trained their models on proprietary datasets filmed under real-world production constraints. <\/p>\n
The goal isn’t to replace the DP; it’s to fix the bumps and snags you hit while in production. <\/p>\n
Some examples of this would be: <\/p>\n
Missing Coverage: Creating that one shot you forgot to get before the sun went down.Continuity Headaches: Fixing the coffee cup that moved between takes without a reshoot.Lighting and Backdrops: Adjusting the “visual logic” of a scene in post-production to match the director’s intent.<\/p>\n
The idea is that these tools are used by human editors to maintain the tone, consistency, and flow of production. <\/p>\n
The “Disintermediation” of VFX<\/p>\n
Look, you can’t talk about AI and be all sunshine and rainbows. Like any tool, it can be used incorrectly. <\/p>\n
Affleck noted that AI is going to “disintermediate” the laborious, costly aspects of filmmaking.<\/p>\n
“I wouldn\u2019t like to be in the visual effects business; they\u2019re in trouble,” Affleck said. He argues that while it used to take a thousand people to render a complex sequence, AI will soon allow a handful of creators to do the same for a fraction of the cost. <\/p>\n
We’re going to see money saved, and even indies will be able to use this new tech. But I do think we’ll see some job loss, as these crews will inevitably get much smaller. <\/p>\n
Why Netflix is Doubling Down<\/p>\n
Netflix isn’t planning to sell InterPositive as a commercial software (at least not yet). Instead, they are integrating it into their production pipeline to give their creative partners more flexibility.<\/p>\n
This is a great tool for them. It saves them on reshoots, and it can help attract other filmmakers into working with them when they see the polished finished products. <\/p>\n
By bringing Affleck on as a senior advisor, Netflix is signaling that they want AI tools that are “filmmaker-friendly.” <\/p>\n
And they’re choosing a popular filmmaker to lead the charge. <\/p>\n
Summing It All Up <\/p>\n
We all need to be more level-headed about AI, and whatever we program it to do, the art needs to be in the hands of the human, and the taskmaster stuff with the tech. <\/p>\n
