Superheroes have been around for decades, evolving with the times. From the silver age to the golden age to whatever modern interpretation they have now, superheroes are a timeless presence that everyone can enjoy. The 2010s hit a superhero peak unlike anything fans have seen before, with movies such as Avengers: Infinity War and Wonder Woman establishing themselves as comic-book masterpieces. The 2020s, on the other hand, haven’t been as iconic, with a slew of disastrous movies, boring TV shows, dying universes, and overall superhero fatigue.

However, as we enter the latter half of the 2020s, fans can say that the superhero genre is looking up. Marvel is slowly returning to form with a handful of good movies, including The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and the new DCU is taking shape nicely. This decade may not have been the best, but it is home to a handful of superhero masterpieces, which is why this list will highlight the only five superhero movies of the 2020s that can be considered masterpieces. Based on originality, story, acting, entertainment value, directing, comic-book accuracy, fan opinion, critical acclaim, overall quality, and how well it avoided superhero fatigue, these ten superhero films are the only ones that can truly honor the title of a masterpiece.

‘Thunderbolts*’ (2025)

The 2020s were especially harsh on Marvel and the MCU, which couldn’t find its footing after the end of Phase 4, providing a disorganized mess of movies and Disney+ original shows. However, after a step in the right direction in 2024, 2025 was an excellent year, highlighted by Thunderbolts*. Most people may only see the bright side of superheroes, but there is a whole underworld full of washed-up assassins and super soldiers looking for a second chance. After a failed assassination attempt, these dregs of the superhero world must team up to escape alive and learn the truth about their mysterious friend, Bob (Lewis Pullman).

The MCU only has one movie on this list, and while Deadpool & Wolverine and Spider-Man: No Way Home were great, those movies are mainly fan service that can’t be considered masterpieces. Thunderbolts*, on the other hand, was an unexpected delight that instantly became an MCU classic and easily their best film of the decade so far. This mishmash of characters was surprisingly endearing and engaging, providing entertaining dynamics while all having unique arcs, flaws, and moments to shine. With a relatable message and great vibes, Thunderbolts is an important Marvel film that is a true modern superhero masterpiece that will still hold up in the coming decades.

‘Superman’ (2025)

James Gunn is one of the greatest superhero movie directors ever, and he seems to be in his bag for the 2020s, with three of the best movies of the decade, two being on this list. Superman kick-started his new DCU, introducing fans to a fun world with plenty of storytelling potential. Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) is up to his usual antics, this time using a brewing war to get the public to hate Superman (David Corenswet). However, when a new piece of information falls into his lap, the Man of Steel has an identity crisis that turns the world against him.

It may be a bit controversial to have Superman on this list, considering it does have its share of flaws, but the originality, passion, and overall success easily make it a masterpiece and an excellent start to the DCU. Superman is wacky, colorful, vibrant, exhilarating, and an absolute blast from start to finish. The world already feels established, and the tone is exactly what fans want from a modern adaptation of the character. Superman is a breath of fresh air that leaves a lot of room for the universe to grow, but also stands on its own as one of the best movies ever made about the Man of Steel. With Man of Tomorrow coming out in 2027, fans could be in store for a new superhero masterpiece every year if Gunn keeps this pace.

‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021)

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 may not be on this list, but Gunn has a second entry in The Suicide Squad, a refreshing superhero masterpiece of the 2020s. Superheroes are meant to conquer any challenge sent their way, but sometimes there are jobs even too dirty for them, and that is where the villains come in. This titular group of characters is a task force that is sent to investigate a remote island and expose its secret weapon. However, a group of misfits is bound to have misadventures, and this band of eccentric villains gets caught up in the chaos of their own making.

With back-to-back entries, Gunn is a proven superhero genius, and The Suicide Squad might just be his best work, for the 2020s at least. It is a shame that this movie never reached a larger audience, with the pandemic and streaming restricting its theatrical appearance. Still, The Suicide Squad dialled it up to eleven, making up for the first movie in a big way. The comedy is on point, the action is incredible, the style is unmatched, and the film is dripping with creativity. The Suicide Squad is a compelling superhero movie that somehow gives the entire cast proper development, balancing them well with the humor, action, story, and pure, unfiltered excitement.

‘The Batman’ (2022)

The 2020s seem to be DC’s decade, with three superhero masterpieces on this list and many more on the horizon. However, the biggest achievement from DC in the 2020s was The Batman. Gotham City is running rampant with crime and violence, and the newest threat is a mysterious killer known as the Riddler (Paul Dano). Killing anyone involved in a certain scandal, the only one who can stop this crazed villain is Batman (Robert Pattinson), who seems to have completely ignored the man under the mask, Bruce Wayne.

It may be a while until fans get The Batman Part II, but the first one alone has gone down in history as an all-time classic. The Batman was a bit long, and it is by no means perfect, but it is easily the best live-action superhero movie of the 2020s so far, making it a masterpiece of the decade. The mystery, tone, aesthetic, cinematography, and story were all magnificent, creating a grounded, gritty, yet authentic Batman experience that fans loved. Pattinson excelled in the role, Dano established himself as a memorable villain, and perfect side performances from Zoë Kravitz and Colin Farrell made the movie even more flawless. The Batman is a dark and gripping superhero film that restored faith in the genre, and fans can’t wait for the sequel.

‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ (2023)

"Miles

The 2010s were jam-packed with some of the best superhero films of all time, but one standout was Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which many say is one of the greatest animated movies of all time. That is a high bar to match, but the sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, delivered in a big way. Miles (Shameik Moore) is still figuring things out as Spider-Man, but when he sneaks into the “secret” spider society and learns that they will let his father die, he takes matters into his own hands to rewrite fate.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is both better and worse than Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in many ways, but it wasn’t as groundbreaking. However, that shouldn’t take anything away from it; plus, it also improved the animation, story, and thrills. The visual language, colors, animation, and distinct style create an unforgettable comic-book movie that proves animation is the best medium for creativity and superhero movies. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a feast for the eyes that fans can’t help but indulge in, but its themes, story, unforgettable moments, and distinguished vibe make it a perfect superhero movie that is the best the 2020s have to offer.

Superheroes have been around for decades, evolving with the times.
