Teddy Swims<\/a> followed up his back-to-back Coachella performances with a potent set at Stagecoach on Saturday and once again brought out David Lee Roth<\/a> for the occasion.<\/p>\n

After singing his new single, \u201cMr. Know It All,\u201d and \u201cSome Things I\u2019ll Never Know\u201d\u00a0from his debut studio album\u00a0I\u2019ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1), Swims invited the former Van Halen frontman onstage to once again play \u201cJump.\u201d<\/a> Like the duo\u2019s previous two performances at Coachella, it was a standout moment at their Stagecoach iteration as fans fist-pumped the air in dusty cowboy hats and belted the lyrics.<\/p>\n

During Swims\u2019 previous Coachella sets, the Grammy-nominated artist brought out\u00a0Joe Jonas<\/a> to sing the country-flavored Jonas Brothers ballad \u201cWhen You Look Me in the Eyes\u201d and \u00a0Vanessa Carlton<\/a>, who played her resurgent Nineties smash \u201cA Thousand Miles.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rolling Stone spoke to Roth right after the Stagecoach set, who called his duet with Swims a \u201c45 [miles per hour] summer ride up to Stagecoach,\u201d noting, \u201cClassic Van Halen is probably 30 percent cowboy hat and boot.\u201d When asked what made \u201cJump\u201d his song of choice two festivals in a row, Roth replied that it has a universal appeal that is physical and emotional. \u201cIt\u2019s a song about ascending, taking a shot, testing the deep end,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s about leading with your forehead, and I\u2019ve been places with mine you wouldn\u2019t go with a pistol \u2014 which is cowboy humor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roth, who beams when both performing with and speaking about Swims, says they share a \u201cwabi-sabi disposition,\u201d a Japanese philosophy he says means \u201cthat which is perfect because it\u2019s a little fucked up, like my voice.\u201d As Stagecoach embraces rock-centric acts like Counting Crows and Third Eye Blind, as well as genre-defying artists like BigXthaPlug, Roth reflected on how rock & roll has changed since his days in Van Halen.<\/p>\n

\u201cCulture is a verb. It\u2019s not a thing. Culture is something you do, and it changes constantly,\u201d he said. \u201cDon\u2019t just learn to do the waltz. Learn the Cha Cha and learn to enjoy it. And that\u2019s in my classic songbook. It\u2019s everything from West Side Story to Ricky Ricardo.\u201d<\/p>\n
