With two words, Marvel just made July 1 an unmissable occasion for X-Men fans, as one of the most exciting characters of the last decade officially debuts in Marvel’s modern day.

It’s been an incredibly eventful few years for X-Men, as Marvel revamped the franchise following the 2019-2024 Krakoan Era, launching its ‘from the Ashes’ era. Marvel has been busy establishing a new status quo, with new teams, new relationships and new foes – the publisher even replaced Magneto as the team’s main antagonist.

However, one of its coolest moves has failed to pay off until now – the introduction of arguably the most powerful mutant of all time.

Justina LaGuardia Returns to X-Men Lore July 1

Marvel just released solicit information for X-Men United #5, confirming that the comic will finally revisit Justina LaGuardia – a character introduced in mid-2025 as the missing piece of X-Men lore.

Iceman’s dream of bringing all the X-Men together for fun times and fellowship has backfired and left Graymatter Lane vulnerable as the teaching corps find themselves trapped on a distant plane of existence! Bad timing, as Lourdes Chantal is waiting in the wings on one side, a shadowy figure on the other – and who is Justina LaGuardia?!

Justina LaGuardia was created in 2025’s Giant-Size X-Men by Al Ewing and Sara Pichelli, introduced in a flashback story to when Xavier was recruiting his second main X-Men team – the one that introduced Colossus, Nightcrawler, Storm and more. Unlike the other recruits, Italian detective Justina turned Xavier down, accusing him of causing more harm than good with his paramilitary group of teenagers.

Now, she’s back, making contact with the X-Men in the early days of their new mutant school, Graymatter Lane, and stepping in as they’re seemingly attacked by the Shadow King, aka Amahl Farouk.

Why Is Justina LaGuardia’s Return a Big Deal?

"justina

LaGuardia immediately caught fan attention not because she turned down Xavier’s invitation to the X-Men, but because of how she did it. Justina revealed that her mutant power is to be ‘superior’ to all those around her. She is faster and stronger than anyone in her vicinity, and has a better version of any superhuman power she encounters – including Xavier’s Omega-level telepathy.

While she has not yet officially taken the name, Marvel fans have assumed that Justina’s mutant codename will be ‘Superior’ – the title of the story that introduced her.

Justina removed herself from Xavier’s memory by wielding his own powers against him, and stated that she planned to hone her abilities before offering her mutant gifts to the worlds, promising, “I do not think you will like how I do it.”

While Justina’s existence was only revealed a year ago, she’s officially been MIA for fifty-one years’ worth of events, making her ‘return’ a big deal. Xavier recently left Earth to venture into space – is LaGuardia emerging now because Professor X isn’t around to stop her?

"cyclops

Another possibility is that LaGuardia wants to be a part of the X-Men’s new school. Xavier’s school was effectively abandoned several years ago, and has now been transformed into a mutant prison. In response, the X-Men have created a new telepathic plane where mutants from all over the world can come to harness their abilities.

"kitty

kitty pryde showcases x-men’s new school to nightcrawler

Given LaGuardia didn’t approve of Xavier’s methods, it’s a safe bet she won’t want an even bigger school run by the X-Men to flourish – and she may find some unusual allies. Relationships between various X-Men heroes are still strained, and Cyclops believes that gathering mutantkind together is a mistake, even setting fire to the school to try and dissuade his old allies from their course of action.

"THE

THE X-MEN STANDING UNITED

With young mutants freshly arriving at Graymatter Lane and the X-Men seriously at odds, there’s never been a better time to drive a wedge between them and replace them as the de facto leaders of mutantkind. And if the heroes attempt to overpower LaGuardia, they’re in for a nasty surprise, as their own amplified powers are deployed against them.

No X-Men Fan Should Miss Justina LaGuardia’s Return

"the

the x-man that never was promo art, introducing justina laguardia

In both powers and outlook, Justina LaGuardia is one of the most interesting characters X-Men has introduced in years – someone who doesn’t approve of the X-Men because she sees them as chaotic amateurs, rather than because she disagrees with their ends.

What has Justina been doing for nearly the entirety of X-Men history, and what has she achieved in terms of her own mission, separate to Xavier’s dream? Her powers make her one of the biggest potential threats X-Men has ever introduced, while her backstory confirms she’s a smart, patient, tactical person with a detailed plan of what she wants to accomplish.

For those reasons, no X-Men fan should miss Justina LaGuardia’s return on July 1, introducing her to Marvel’s modern day for the first time.

X-Men United #5 is coming from Marvel Comics July 1.
