And about 30% of people with it also develop psoriatic arthritis, which causes joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psoriasis.org\/about-psoriatic-arthritis\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.psoriasis.org\/about-psoriatic-arthritis\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"National Psoriasis Foundation\" data-node-id=\"11.1\" class=\"body-link css-hllz2d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Psoriasis Foundation<\/a>. And the lower your vitamin D levels, the more severe your symptoms, per research in the <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10065110\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10065110\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Sao Paulo Medical Journal\" data-node-id=\"11.7\" class=\"body-link css-hllz2d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sao Paulo Medical Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Heart disease<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Heart disease is the leading cause of death for American adults, and it\u2019s been closely linked to vitamin D levels. A review in <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8541123\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8541123\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Nutrients\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-hllz2d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nutrients<\/a> found that people with low vitamin D were 1.4 times more likely to experience heart failure\u2014and people with very low vitamin D were twice as likely to. In one study in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0261561420305781\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0261561420305781\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Clinical Nutrition\" data-node-id=\"15.1\" class=\"body-link css-hllz2d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Clinical Nutrition<\/a>, pneumonia patients with the highest levels of vitamin D had the fewest complications. Meanwhile, patients with the lowest levels were more likely to experience complications and die of the infection. And according to a more recent study in <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ofid\/article\/12\/12\/ofaf706\/8328415\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ofid\/article\/12\/12\/ofaf706\/8328415\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Open Forum Infectious Diseases\" data-node-id=\"15.3\" class=\"body-link css-hllz2d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Open Forum Infectious Diseases<\/a>, people who are deficient in vitamin D are more likely to catch pneumonia and have a higher mortality risk.<\/p>\n<p>Schizophrenia<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">About 35% of the population is deficient in vitamin D\u2014but about 70% of people with schizophrenia are, per a meta-analysis in <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8505257\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8505257\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Molecular Psychiatry\" data-node-id=\"17.1\" class=\"body-link css-hllz2d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Molecular Psychiatry<\/a>. This link is complicated, because people with schizophrenia also tend to have worse diets, get less exercise, and have poorer health outcomes than the general population. But <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0920996421002164\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0920996421002164\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"other research\" data-node-id=\"17.3\" class=\"body-link css-hllz2d emevuu60\">other research<\/a> suggests that people who are vitamin-D-deficient in early childhood are more likely to develop neurological conditions, like schizophrenia, later in life.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple sclerosis<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">People with vitamin D deficiency are 54% more likely to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/life\/a41106982\/multiple-sclerosis-symptoms-females\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/life\/a41106982\/multiple-sclerosis-symptoms-females\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"multiple sclerosis\" data-node-id=\"19.1\" class=\"body-link css-hllz2d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">multiple sclerosis<\/a> (MS) than people who get enough of the nutrient, per a meta-analysis in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S221103482400381X\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S221103482400381X\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders\" data-node-id=\"19.3\" class=\"body-link css-hllz2d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders<\/a>.
