\n\tLet\u2019s do the Time Warp again \u2014 50 years later<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Rocky Horror Picture Show<\/a> marks its milestone birthday this year, and in celebration<\/a> the Academy Museum<\/a> hosted a special screening of the new 4K remaster<\/a> on Friday night, accompanied by a conversation with star Tim Curry<\/a>. Also in the crowd at the event were Barry Bostwick (who played Brad Majors), Patricia Quinn (Magenta), Nell Campbell (Columbia) and producer Lou Adler, who all later joined Curry for photos. <\/p>\n

\n\tCurry was met by a huge standing ovation as he took the stage \u2014 in front of a sold-out, costumed crowd, many holding onto prop kits that were sold in the lobby \u2014 joking, \u201cI\u2019m so excited by this and very honored by the Academy to do this presentation of our movie, which has dragged on for 50 years.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tHe reflected on originating the role of Dr.\u00a0Frank-N-Furter in the theater before making his film debut in Rocky Horror, teasing that Jim Sharman\u2019s \u201cdirecting technique was you weren\u2019t allowed to bore him, and if he wasn\u2019t bored, it stayed in.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tCurry noted that because of the character\u2019s name, he originally \u201cplayed him with a German accent, which evidently bored Jim;\u201d he later found the correct accent on a bus in London, while listening to a chat between two upper-class women. \u201cThey wanted to sound like the queen and that seemed appropriate for Frank, really, who clearly thought he was the queen,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also spoke about doing his own makeup when the show was on stage \u2014 \u201cIt was like a back-street hooker\u201d \u2014 but when it came to the movie, professional makeup artist Pierre La Roche was brought in. Curry admitted, \u201cI was horrified, actually, by his first attempt because I thought I was ready for the runway; it was just too polished for me. I wanted to just kind of smudge it all, but I didn\u2019t dare, because he was a very formidable character.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLooking back on 50 years of cult fandom, Curry said the movie being embraced particularly by the LGBTQ audience \u201cmeans a lot because I think the message of the film \u2014 don\u2019t dream it, be it \u2014 is very important. One of the things that the movie does, I think, is give anyone permission to behave as badly as they really want, in whatever way and with whom. And I\u2019m proud of that.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tHe added that the film \u201ccertainly singled me out from the pack for a moment\u201d when it came to his post-Rocky Horror career, but \u201cI don\u2019t think it helped casting at all. I was really quite worried that it was going to be difficult, but it wasn\u2019t.\u201d The actor recalled when director Stephen Frears reached out to him about Three Men in a Boat,\u201d and I said, \u2018What makes you think that I can play a Victorian bank clerk?\u2019 and he said, \u2018If you can play Frank-N-Furter, you can play anything.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCurry closed out the evening by touching on his health, following a 2012 stroke that has left him in a wheelchair. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was having a massage at the time and I didn\u2019t even actually notice anything, but the guy who was doing the massage said, \u2018I\u2019m worried about you, I want to call an ambulance.\u2019 And he did, and I said, \u2018That\u2019s so silly,’\u201d Curry said. \u201cI still can\u2019t walk, which is why I\u2019m in this silly chair, and that\u2019s very limiting. So I won\u2019t be singing and I won\u2019t be dancing very soon. I still have real problems with my left leg.\u201d With his signature humor, he then let out a yawn and declared, \u201cIt\u2019s awfully late, isn\u2019t it?
