Coronation Street<\/a> icon Sally Dynevor<\/a> has confirmed her character Sally Metcalfe’s future on the soap. The star has been a staple on the show for an incredible 40 years, giving us many memorable storylines \u2013 including her battle with breast cancer and her comical run for council elections.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on her time on the series, Sally said she had no plans to retire, telling Prima<\/a>: “When you love what you do, why would you want to retire?…the idea of just packing it all in and sitting at home and going, ‘Right, what shall I do today?’ Just absolutely not.<\/p>\n

“I don’t think I’m ever going to retire,” she added. “I’ll stay here as long as they want me; if they don’t want me any more, I’ll still try to do something, because the idea of retirement just sounds awful to me!”<\/p>\n

Sally also admitted that she “never thought in a million years” she would have been on Corrie for 40 years, revealing she imagined at the time “it was going to be a year at the most”.<\/p>\n

“But I look back now and I think, ‘Gosh, four decades, that is a long time,'” she added. “Not many people are in the same job for 40 years any more, let alone acting!”<\/p>\n

This isn’t the first time the actor has reassured fans that she’ll be staying on the series<\/a>, Sally saying last year to Woman’s Weekly: “I want to keep working, it’s good for my brain. So, if they still want me, maybe I’ll be in the show in my 70s and 80s. I’ll just keep going.”<\/p>\n

“It’s such a great job and I feel very grateful I’ve still got it after 40 years,” she added.<\/p>\n

“I’m not in it as much as I used to be but I drove in the other day and, as the barrier went up, I just had this huge smile because it felt like I was home. I knew I was going to have a fun day.”<\/p>\n

The star marked her 40th anniversary on the soap back in January<\/a>, declaring at the time: “What a ride it has been.”<\/p>\n

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX<\/a>.<\/p>\n
