And this time, we may be going there to stay.<\/p>\n<p>On March 24, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a> administrator Jared Isaacman <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/nasa-announces-near-impossible-space-plans-including-usd20b-moon-base-and-humanitys-first-nuclear-powered-interplanetary-spacecraft\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/nasa-announces-near-impossible-space-plans-including-usd20b-moon-base-and-humanitys-first-nuclear-powered-interplanetary-spacecraft\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/nasa-announces-near-impossible-space-plans-including-usd20b-moon-base-and-humanitys-first-nuclear-powered-interplanetary-spacecraft\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced new plans<\/a> to build a &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NASAAdmin\/status\/2036461100661698990\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NASAAdmin\/status\/2036461100661698990\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">sustained human presence<\/a>&#8221; on the moon, complete with a permanent lunar base. Construction of humanity&#8217;s new home away from Earth could begin as soon as 2027, Isaacman said.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-5f7c7338-b45f-4308-9229-d580d63a87b5-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The announcement came just a month after <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/spacex\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/spacex\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/spacex\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> CEO <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/elon-musk\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/elon-musk\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/elon-musk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elon Musk<\/a> similarly <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/2020640004628742577\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/2020640004628742577\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">ditched his company&#8217;s plans<\/a> to visit Mars in favor of establishing a &#8220;lunar self-growing city&#8221; within the next 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-508ac532-06d0-4b28-9860-14dca2246974\">It&#8217;s an exciting prospect \u2014 but scientists say lunar colonization won&#8217;t be as simple as packing up and lifting off. The moon&#8217;s environment is harsh: think razor-sharp, electrified dust and a constant <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/chinese-lander-reveals-giant-cavity-of-radiation-between-earth-and-the-moon-and-it-could-change-how-lunar-exploration-is-done\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/chinese-lander-reveals-giant-cavity-of-radiation-between-earth-and-the-moon-and-it-could-change-how-lunar-exploration-is-done\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/chinese-lander-reveals-giant-cavity-of-radiation-between-earth-and-the-moon-and-it-could-change-how-lunar-exploration-is-done\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stream of radioactive particles<\/a> travelling at light speed. Scientists still aren&#8217;t sure how this increased dose of cosmic radiation, coupled with the moon&#8217;s weaker gravitational pull, relative to Earth, will affect the human body in the medium- to long-term.<\/p>\n<p>And then there&#8217;s technological feasibility: Where will astronauts live, and with what resources? At the moment, these big questions are still awaiting answers that may not arrive in time for NASA and Musk&#8217;s proposed plans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think we&#8217;re quite ready,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.gsfc.nasa.gov\/sci\/bio\/caitlin.ahrens\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.gsfc.nasa.gov\/sci\/bio\/caitlin.ahrens\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Caitlin Ahrens<\/a>, a researcher at University of Maryland and NASA&#8217;s Goddard Space Flight Center who studies the lunar environment, told Live Science. &#8220;A decade may seem far away to some people. Without wind and liquid water, the moon&#8217;s dust doesn&#8217;t soften over time. &#8220;We&#8217;re talking very, very sharp little pollen[-size] shards here,&#8221; Ahrens said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also easily electrified. Simply walking on the moon kicks up dust clouds, and rovers traversing the lunar landscape shoot up &#8220;rooster tails&#8221; of electrically charged, levitating dust, which sticks to anything in its path, Ahrens said. Energized dust can clog breathing vents in potential living quarters, scratch up spacesuits and coat solar panels, potentially overheating and breaking them. (Dust clogs have already spelled doom for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/mars-insight-lander-dead\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/mars-insight-lander-dead\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/mars-insight-lander-dead\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">several<\/a> <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/chinas-mars-rover-may-be-dead-in-the-dust-new-nasa-images-reveal\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/chinas-mars-rover-may-be-dead-in-the-dust-new-nasa-images-reveal\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/chinas-mars-rover-may-be-dead-in-the-dust-new-nasa-images-reveal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a> <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/64769-mars-rover-opportunity-declared-dead.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/64769-mars-rover-opportunity-declared-dead.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/64769-mars-rover-opportunity-declared-dead.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rovers<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Without the soft blankets of Earth&#8217;s atmosphere and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/38059-magnetism.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/38059-magnetism.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/38059-magnetism.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">magnetic shield<\/a>, moon inhabitants would also be constantly blasted by radiation. Cosmic radiation is &#8220;pretty much omnipresent anywhere you go into space,&#8221; including on the moon, Dr. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/med.ucf.edu\/person\/emmanuel-urquieta-md-ms-fasma\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/med.ucf.edu\/person\/emmanuel-urquieta-md-ms-fasma\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Emmanuel Urquieta<\/a>, an aerospace medicine researcher at the University of Central Florida, told Live Science. &#8220;It&#8217;s incredibly difficult to shield.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cancer is a potential risk, but because health effects of radiation take time to develop, we wouldn&#8217;t know for certain if this is a major risk factor until potentially decades after landing human settlers on the moon. &#8220;Every person that goes to space\u2026 will absolutely be test subjects,&#8221; Urquieta said.<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>    <a id=\"elk-bdf7ef21-b65f-4bdc-8c4c-7b337ec66967\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>We&#8217;re not ready for self-defense<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-2049dcb2-313e-42a5-a181-c396c3c7f195\">Humans on the moon would need hefty building materials to protect lunar habitats against these hazards. Metal or <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/stmd\/niac\/niac-studies\/lunar-glass-structure-lungs-enabling-construction-of-monolithic-habitats-in-low-gravity\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/stmd\/niac\/niac-studies\/lunar-glass-structure-lungs-enabling-construction-of-monolithic-habitats-in-low-gravity\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">glass domes<\/a>, subterranean habitats and housing made of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/technology\/manufacturing-materials-3-d-printing\/nasa-looks-to-advance-3d-printing-construction-systems-for-the-moon-and-mars\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/technology\/manufacturing-materials-3-d-printing\/nasa-looks-to-advance-3d-printing-construction-systems-for-the-moon-and-mars\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">3D-printed moon soil<\/a> are all potential options being investigated.<\/p>\n<p>But Ahrens, who also works on lunar risk assessment, doesn&#8217;t think we&#8217;re ready to plan construction. For example, if NASA decides to invest in an underground habitat \u2014 perhaps the most surefire way to avoid radiation \u2014 scientists still have no idea how to dig on the moon, she said.<\/p>\n<p>We have to be very careful not to sell something which [we] don&#8217;t have<\/p>\n<p>Giuseppe Reibaldi, president of the Moon Village Association<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-8a08396a-1e8d-4642-a847-7ffdcae6d409\">Even with sufficiently protective living quarters, the moon&#8217;s weaker gravitational pull \u2014 just one-sixth that of Earth \u2014 may pose health risks. From <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/health\/ways-the-body-changes-in-space\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/health\/ways-the-body-changes-in-space\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/health\/ways-the-body-changes-in-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previous space travel<\/a> we know that, without the gravitational force humans evolved with, our bones and muscles need significant amounts of exercise to prevent them from withering away. But it wouldn&#8217;t be practical to lug heavy treadmills, like those used on the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/international-space-station\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/international-space-station\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/international-space-station\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Space Station<\/a>, to the moon, Urquieta said.<\/p>\n<p>A lack of gravity may also redistribute the body&#8217;s natural balance of fluids, with potentially disastrous effects. Normally, due to the downward tug of gravity, up to 80% of our blood is in our legs at any given time, Urquieta said. But on the moon, more fluids would flow to the body&#8217;s upper half, causing loss of blood as the body attempts to rebalance itself, as well as potential <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/reference\/risk-of-spaceflight-associated-neuro-ocular-syndrome-sans\/#:~:text=Chronic%20weightlessness%20can%20cause%20bodily,and%20swelling%20in%20the%20brain.\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/reference\/risk-of-spaceflight-associated-neuro-ocular-syndrome-sans\/#:~:text=Chronic%20weightlessness%20can%20cause%20bodily,and%20swelling%20in%20the%20brain.\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">swelling at the back of the eye<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2755307\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2755307\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">jugular vein thrombosis<\/a>, a condition that causes potentially fatal blood clots in the neck. Compared to zero gravity, lunar partial gravity may or may not pose similar health risks. Urquieta said researchers won&#8217;t know until people spend some time there.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-77282d47-caa7-4613-b82c-3e37a3e12383\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>The future of lunar settlement<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-80d1b139-2d1e-47e2-82a1-bb14bb09d278\">Ultimately, Ahrens said, these challenges boil down to the need for more data, which scientists are hoping to gather with missions like NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/artemis\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/artemis\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Artemis<\/a> campaign to return humans to the lunar surface as soon as 2028. But she envisions a much slower timeline than Musk&#8217;s and Isaacman&#8217;s plans; scientists haven&#8217;t even taken a sample of the moon&#8217;s ice yet \u2014 a resource lunar settlement planners are banking on.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on its depth and composition, lunar ice could provide water, rocket fuel and rare earth metals. But until scientists get a physical sample of ice, they can&#8217;t rely on its usefulness or economic prospects.
