\n\tWhile millions of fans in the U.S. have been anticipating Friday\u2019s release of \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2,\u201d<\/a> the film\u2019s rollout in Asia has led to calls for a boycott by some in China, Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

The pushback is over the representation of an Asian character, \u201cJin Chao,\u201d who acts as an assistant to Anne Hathaway\u2019s Andy Sachs character at the fictitious \u201cRunway\u201d magazine. In a 38-second promotional clip, the unfashionably dressed \u201cJin Chao,\u201d who is played by Helen J. Shen, nervously rattles off her overachieving academic credentials to Hathaway\u2019s character. While some have taken issue with what they consider to be erroneous stereotypes, others have suggested that the name \u201cJin Chao\u201d sounds similar to \u201cChing Chong,\u201d a derogatory anti-Asian term that dates back to the 19th century.<\/p>\n

Wendy Finerman, the producer of \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada<\/a> 2,\u201d deferred a media request to a spokesperson for Disney<\/a>, which owns 20th Century Studios. The Disney<\/a> spokesperson declined to comment about the response in Asia. A representative for Shen acknowledged a media request, but did not respond. A DM to Shen was unreturned, as were media requests to the film\u2019s costume designer Molly Rogers.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s been 20 years since moviegoers turned the original flick, which was based on former Vogue-er Lauren Weisberger\u2019s page-turner, \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada.\u201d The original grossed $326.7 million at the box office globally. In addition to Hathaway, the sequel\u00a0 welcomes back other leading cast members like Meryl Streep<\/a>, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After the original film\u2019s release, Blunt\u2019s role as an overworked assistant to Streep\u2019s Anna Wintour<\/a>-inspired character sparked memes of her repeating \u201cI love my job.\u201d But when asked recently on \u201cBetches\u201d for advice to girls who hate their jobs, Blunt, whose net worth is reportedly $80 million, said, \u201cQuit, no. Look, I think, just find something that you deeply love.\u201d That fanned some flames on social media. But Blunt looked cool in a white translucent dress and Mikimoto jewelry on Thursday, when she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Thursday along with her co-star Tucci in Los Angeles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Movie fans will be able to buy into the sequel through a bevy of product tie-ins with Diet Coke, Starbucks, Dior<\/a>, Tiffany & Co., L\u2019Or\u00e9al Paris and more.
