A major contributing factor to this success is the soundtrack, composed by Joff Bush, which has just been recorded in new orchestral arrangements by Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) and Camerata conducted by Joseph Twist, and titled Bluey: Up Here.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Bluey creator] Joe [Brumm] loves music: we\u2019ll be talking about the Brandenburg concertos and AC\/DC in the same sentence,\u201d says Bush, who has scored all 154 episodes. What is important when writing music for young children? \u201cWe avoid sudden changes,\u201d Bush explains, \u201cand focus on clarity; we want to help tell the story as much as possible. It\u2019s also about making the child feel safe and comfortable.\u201d <\/p>\n

But the real skill in Bush\u2019s scores \u2013 and the reason we\u2019re speaking over time zones today \u2013 is his clever incorporation of canonic classical music, something that has a long tradition in children\u2019s TV. Lang Lang has spoken about his first experiences of the piano \u2013 not at a concert hall, but through watching Tom and Jerry, where, as a toddler, the concert pianist first heard Liszt\u2019s Hungarian Rhapsody No 2. Bush also uses verbatim melodies: Mozart\u2019s Rondo alla Turca is used in Bluey\u2019s very first episode, \u2018Magic Xylophone\u2019, and Beethoven\u2019s Ode to Joy features in\u2018Bike\u2019. It\u2019s rather more sophisticated than Teletubbies say \u201cEh-oh!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s something magical about bringing in the history of music,\u201d says Bush, \u201cI hope that through the album kids are able to find their own way to connect with it and maybe it might spark a little journey to explore all sorts of different pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n

To that end, for those interested in taking the next step on from \u2018Sticky Gecko\u2019 et al, there\u2019s an Apple Music Classical playlist curated by Bush that includes Spring from Vivaldi\u2019s The Four Seasons, Waltz of the Flowers by Tchaikovsky, the Can-Can from Offenbach\u2019s Orpheus in the Underworld and lots of engaging, accessible pieces. <\/p>\n

And for those ready to try playing music themselves, Bush \u2013 erstwhile piano teacher and recent father (his baby conducted the Queensland Symphony Orchestra during the album recording) \u2013 has just published Bluey: First Ever Piano Book (Faber, \u00a38.99), which uses games and stories from the Bluey universe \u2013 and begins our heroine\u2019s most exciting adventure yet: playing classical music.<\/p>\n
