The new division is intended to deploy ICON’s additive construction systems for U.S. military infrastructure and NASA-led space programs, while supporting the company’s expansion into government and national security applications.

Alongside the launch, ICON has appointed Will Hurd as President of ICON Prime. Hurd, a former CIA officer and three-term U.S. Congressman, will lead strategy and government partnerships as the company scales its technology across defense and aerospace sectors.

ICON CEO Jason Ballard stated that the new unit consolidates the company’s robotics, software, and materials capabilities into a platform designed to address infrastructure challenges in national security contexts. According to the company, the move reflects growing demand for faster, more resilient construction systems capable of operating in constrained or remote environments.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.newsbeep.com/il/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-4-1024x768.png" alt="Will Hurd, President ICON Prime. The company reports more than $360 million in awarded contracts, with projects delivered in partnership with the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Space Force, Defense Innovation Unit, DARPA, and NASA.

To date, ICON has completed over 240 construction projects globally, including military barracks, robotics laboratories, simulated space habitats, and disaster response infrastructure. The company’s additive construction systems are already in operation across multiple military installations, marking a transition from prototype-stage validation to repeatable, production-scale deployment.

Two projects illustrate this shift toward production-scale implementation. In December 2025, ICON secured a $62.8 million contract with the U.S. Army to construct ten 3D printed barracks at Fort Bliss, Texas, with construction beginning in January 2026. The project is expected to deliver fully compliant units within six months, representing one of the largest deployments of robotic construction technology for U.S. defense infrastructure.

A second contract, awarded in March 2026, will see ICON construct a Rotational Unit Billeting Area (RUBA) and associated infrastructure at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Valued at $67.9 million, with a total potential value of $201 million, the project is designed to support reception, staging, and operational readiness activities. Phase one is scheduled for completion in 2027.

ICON states that its construction systems enable onsite, automated building processes with reduced supply chain dependencies and lower personnel requirements. The company highlights continuous 24/7 operation and simplified logistics as key factors in reducing build times compared to conventional construction methods.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.newsbeep.com/il/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-3-1024x576.png" alt="Ft. Image via ICON.

From terrestrial infrastructure to lunar construction

Beyond defense applications, ICON Prime will also support the company’s work in space-based construction. ICON has been awarded nearly $60 million from NASA to develop systems capable of building structures on the Moon and Mars using locally sourced materials.

The company has previously delivered the Mars Dune Alpha habitat at Johnson Space Center, a 1,700 square foot simulated Martian environment used for NASA’s Crew Health and Performance Analog (CHAPEA) missions. Development work is ongoing in collaboration with NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and other research partners to advance construction technologies for long-duration space habitation.

ICON states that its additive construction approach has been validated through more than 65 full-scale wall tests and over 100 component tests meeting Department of Defense Unified Facility Criteria, with additional seismic testing planned for 2026.

Pilot deployments and scaled construction systems

Earlier pilot deployments of ICON’s construction technology have already been tested in military settings, including the development of 3D printed barracks at Fort Bliss for U.S. troop housing. That project demonstrated the feasibility of using robotic construction systems for defense infrastructure, but remained closer to a pilot-stage implementation. The current Fort Bliss contract, targeting multiple fully compliant barracks units within a defined delivery timeline, builds on this approach for repeatable, production-scale deployment within military construction programs.

This transition follows broader efforts by ICON to commercialize its large-scale additive construction technology through initiatives such as the TITAN program, which aimed to standardize and deploy its robotic systems for real-world building applications. These developments may indicate a progression from technology validation and field trials toward institutional adoption, where additive construction is positioned as a scalable solution for addressing constraints in military construction timelines, supply chain complexity, and the need for rapidly deployable infrastructure.

3D Printing Industry is inviting speakers for its 2026 Additive Manufacturing Applications (AMA) series, covering Energy, Healthcare, Automotive and Mobility, Aerospace, Space and Defense, and Software.
