Apple may be\u00a0paying iPhone owners again,<\/a> this time\u00a0over claims it oversold\u00a0Siri\u2019s artificial intelligence features for some of the latest iPhone models.<\/p>\n

If the $250 million settlement<\/a> is approved by a judge, it would apply to U.S. residents who purchased an iPhone 16, iPhone 16e,\u00a0iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025, according to court documents.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0payout for the roughly 37 million devices is estimated to be around $25 per iPhone, but it could go up to $95 depending on how many people file claims, among other things. Customers who are eligible for the cash will be notified by email or mail, according to the settlement, and there isn\u2019t a portal yet to use to file a claim.<\/p>\n

The \u00a0settlement, which the company reached the Tuesday, stems from a class-action lawsuit filed last year that alleged Apple misled its customers in 2024 when advertising the iPhone 16. Filed in the Northern District of California, the complaint alleged that at Apple\u2019s 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference<\/a>, Apple touted its new AI features for the upcoming iPhone and continued to advertise the features through commercials.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFor many, this marked the first compelling reason in years to spend over $800 on a new iPhone,\u201d the lawsuit stated.<\/p>\n

After the iPhone 16 launched<\/a> in September, 2024, it did not have \u201cApple Intelligence\u201d or an \u201cEnhanced Siri\u201d as it advertised, the lawsuit stated. And in March 2025, the company admitted that certain\u00a0Siri\u00a0AI<\/a> features\u00a0were delayed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cConsumers expressed shock, disappointment, and frustration,\u201d the lawsuit said. \u201cMany stated publicly they would never have purchased or upgraded to the iPhone 16 had they known the truth.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a statement shared with SFGATE, Apple spokesperson Marni Goldberg pointed to its \u201cdozens of features\u201d in the Apple Intelligence category that are available for users, including \u201cVisual Intelligence, Live Translation, Writing Tools,\u00a0Genmoji, Clean Up and many more.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement continued, \u201cApple has reached a settlement to resolve claims related to the availability of two additional features.\u00a0We resolved this matter to stay focused on doing what we do best, delivering the most innovative products and services to our users.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tuesday\u2019s proposed settlement is different from another recent lawsuit over alleged Siri privacy violations.\u00a0That lawsuit, which claimed Siri\u2019s voice tech activated by accident, was settled for $95 million in May 2025. Users who filed claims were able to receive at most $20 per device,\u00a0SFGATE previously reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n
