Brightflame could make a fiery return in Game of Thrones’ hit new series.<\/p>\n

After becoming a massive critical and viewership success for HBO with its first season this winter, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms<\/a> season 2 is already on the way to follow Dunk and Egg’s next misadventure. While Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell are returning as Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon “Egg” Targaryen, respectively, it’s still unclear which other season 1 characters will be back for the next batch of episodes.<\/p>\n

On the red carpet for the premiere of A24’s new horror movie Backrooms, Finn Bennett told ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender that he’d be eager to come back as Prince Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen, the antagonistic elder brother to Egg, in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ future. Bennett noted that he’s unsure if a return for Aerion is in the cards, however, given the legendary Targaryen family member<\/a> doesn’t appear after George R.R. Martin’s first Tales of Dunk and Egg novella on which season 1 is based:<\/p>\n

ScreenRant: Now, obviously, you were killing it as Aerion “Brightflame,” sometimes literally. You’re not in the other novellas, per se, but do we think that Ira [Parker] and George [R.R. Martin] will work you in? Do you want to come back?<\/p>\n

Finn Bennett: “Please! I don’t know. Let’s just wait and see. I was so happy with the way that series came out, and I’m so proud to be a part of it. So proud of Peter and Dexter, and I love all of them.”<\/p>\n

After arguably serving as the primary villain in season 1, Aerion is absent from The Sworn Sword, on which season 2 is based, and Martin’s The Mystery Knight, the story of which a potential season 3 would cover. That said, series co-creator Ira Parker has already made some significant book changes in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1<\/a>, so the possibility remains for season 2 or 3 to make room for an Aerion cameo.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Parker has discussed a 12\u201315 season plan for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms<\/a> if HBO agrees, which would follow Dunk and Egg throughout their lifetimes. If that plan comes to fruition, the series would have plenty more opportunities to bring back Aerion and adapt the future twists and turns of his fate as a Targaryen prince.<\/p>\n

Whether Aerion could still show up in the next outing is unclear, but another major Targaryen character’s potential return has already been shut down. Actor Sam Spruell confirmed shortly after the season 1 finale that Aerion and Egg’s father Maekar Targaryen will not return in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2<\/a>, but made comments similar to Bennett’s about there being the potential to work his character back in down the line.<\/p>\n

The status of Aerion and Egg’s eldest brother, Daeron Targaryen (Henry Ashton), is also uncertain for season 2. Like Aerion and Maekar, Daeron’s story in the larger book universe is far from over after the events of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1’s ending, but he has yet to show up again in Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the anticipation continues to grow surrounding whether Egg, Aerion, and Daeron’s brother Aemon Targaryen, the beloved maester from Game of Thrones, will appear in season 2. Parker has yet to specifically confirm whether Aemon will appear, but has previously alluded to original Game of Thrones characters alive during this timeline potentially appearing.<\/p>\n

As the franchise’s other prequel series also prepares for its long-awaited return with House of the Dragon season 3’s premiere<\/a> on June 21, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is currently in production. While a release date has yet to be announced by HBO, the network has confirmed that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 will premiere in 2027.<\/p>\n
