{"id":43432,"date":"2025-09-28T18:47:28","date_gmt":"2025-09-28T18:47:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/43432\/"},"modified":"2025-09-28T18:47:28","modified_gmt":"2025-09-28T18:47:28","slug":"advancing-antiferromagnetic-spintronics-for-next-gen-memory-and-computing-ucr-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/43432\/","title":{"rendered":"Advancing antiferromagnetic spintronics for next-gen memory and computing | UCR News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UC Riverside has received a Collaborative Research and Training Award of nearly $4 million from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucop.edu\/research-initiatives\/programs\/lab-fees\/prior-awards.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UC National Laboratory Fees Research Program<\/a> to explore how antiferromagnetic spintronics can be used to advantage in advanced memory and computing.<\/p>\n<p>The three-year project proposes to advance microelectronics using antiferromagnetic materials, an ultrafast spin-based technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe semiconductor microelectronics industry is looking for new materials, new phenomena, and new mechanisms to sustain technological advances,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.ucr.edu\/app\/home\/profile\/jings\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jing Shi<\/a>, a distinguished professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.physics.ucr.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">physics and astronomy<\/a> at UCR and the award\u2019s principal investigator. \u201cWith co-principal investigators at UC San Diego, UC Davis, UCLA, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, we aim to cement the University of California\u2019s leadership in this area and obtain extramural center and group funding in the near future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spintronics is spin-based electronics, exploiting spin, which refers to the intrinsic angular momentum of an electron, for information processing. Antiferromagnetic spintronics is a faster and more compact alternative to the current ferromagnetic spintronics used in devices like hard drives and memory chips.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith UCR leading this project, we are well positioned to compete nationally for new funding provided by the CHIPS Act,\u201d Shi said. The CHIPS Act provides funding for the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) for America Fund to support the domestic production of semiconductors.<\/p>\n<p>Shi explained that in ferromagnetic materials, all electron spins align in the same direction, creating a net magnetic moment. In contrast, antiferromagnets have alternating spin directions, resulting in no net magnetic moment. Despite this, the oppositely aligned spin directions can be flipped to represent two distinct states, which can be used for memory storage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe advantage of antiferromagnetic memory is higher density, as the lack of a net magnetic moment means neighboring bits don\u2019t interfere with each other,\u201d Shi said. \u201cAdditionally, memory writing in antiferromagnets is faster due to quicker spin dynamics, driven by a quantum interaction called exchange interaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond memory, antiferromagnets also have potential in computing, particularly in \u201cmagnetic neural networks.\u201d Special antiferromagnets, called easy-plane antiferromagnets, can carry spin pulses over long distances with minimal energy loss, Shi explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese pulses can propagate information through multiple neural layers, similar to how signals are processed in biological neural networks,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is possible because of a quantum state called spin superfluidity, where spin pulses move efficiently through the material without much dissipation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Titled \u201cAntiferromagnetic spintronics for advanced memory and computing,\u201d the project will study these special antiferromagnets and investigate their potential. Researchers will use several lab facilities at UCR as well as those at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Lab.
