These terrifying slasher movie franchises are the best of all time, but which of the classic horror series has the largest number of sequels? Horror is the genre most likely to produce a sequel, and a good monster is hard to keep down for long. Because they are relatively cheap to make, the chance to score a huge profit entices producers to return to the well again and again.

All that is doubly true in the realm of the slasher, a subgenre that is responsible for a large portion of horror’s sequels from the past 50 years. Many of the best slasher films of all time have spawned multiple sequels, though the odd on-off slasher does exist here and there. The simplicity of the slasher makes it ideal for follow-ups.

A noteworthy villain, an ensemble of future victims, and plenty of memorable kills are all it takes to make a passable slasher flick. Plenty of filmmakers have taken that formula and ran with it, creating their own pieces of horror history. Even if the sequels never live up to the quality of the original, the best slasher franchises have dedicated fans who love every minute of the mayhem.

Some of the great slasher franchises have released more than 10 sequels, while others stand as trilogies for now. Regardless of how many movies have already come out, all the franchises on this list are bound to return for another sequel in the future. Each one of these series is responsible for a generation of scares, but some have delivered more than others.

Terrifier – 3 Movies

"David

David Howard Thornton as Art the Clown smiling in a deranged way in Terrifier 3

Though Art the Clown also appears in Damien Leone’s All Hallows’ Eve, the Terrifier franchise has three installments thus far. Brutal, gory, and gleefully sick, Leone’s twisted horror series celebrates the blood-and-guts approach to the slasher franchise. While it isn’t the most thoughtful horror ever produced, it’s certainly some of the most memorable.

A fourth Terrifier film is on the way, so the franchise’s spot at the bottom of this list is subject to change. It’s one of cinema’s best slasher franchises because of how completely unhinged it is. It’s the natural continuation of the spirit of the subgenre, and really resonates with a large portion of the modern horror community. It’s also hated by a large portion too, proving horror is still divisive.

X – 3 Movies

"Pearl,

Pearl bathing in a lake in X

Unlike the rest of the greatest slasher franchise, the X series is the only one that probably isn’t coming back for more sequels. It’s the most imaginative and original horror trilogy in recent memory, and combines classic slasher elements with touches of elevated horror. Essentially, it’s a character study across multiple generations.

The fact that each of the three X films utilizes radically different visuals and scare styles is an amazing accomplishment, one that is only possible thanks to careful planning. From a filmmaking perspective, X might just take the crown as the best slasher series ever. On the other hand, having only three films means the series is at the bottom of this list.

8

Candyman – 4 Films

"Tony

Tony Todd as Candyman

Candyman is the slasher icon of the 1990s, and his four film appearances combine for a stellar horror franchise. Combining creepy folklore and claustrophobic urban terror, Candyman is a rich horror experience with a deeper message. Though the two sequels are inferior, Tony Todd’s performance as the eponymous villain makes them worthwhile additions to the franchise.

Where the Candyman series really cements its place as an all-time great franchise is with the 2021 sequel reboot. It adds touches of elevated horror while maintaining the same themes of the originals. There’s something to be said about how Candyman adds diversity to a less-than-diverse subgenre of horror. He may return for more movies in the future and bolster his numbers.

7

Psycho – 6 Movies

"Norman

Norman looks disturbed in Psycho II

Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is so good that it single-handedly carries the franchise onto the list of greatest slashers. However, Psycho II is a bona fide hidden gem and one of the most underrated horror sequels of all time. What is most amazing about the Psycho franchise is that there are six movies in total, and even one long-running TV show.

Though Psycho III and IV are pretty bad, and so is the cheesy TV movie and abysmal remake, the franchise gets by with two really solid installments. While two out of six sounds like a rough average, most of the best slasher franchises ever made have only a handful of movies that stand the test of time. Nevertheless, Psycho is often overlooked as a slasher franchise.

6

Scream – 7 Movies

"Ghostface

Ghostface looming in the dark in Scream 7

What started as Wes Craven’s tongue-in-cheek parody of horror fandom has actually blossomed into the very thing that Craven lampooned. Scream is one of the most enduring slasher series in film history, with a new sequel hitting theaters earlier in 2026. The mystery slasher format has a lot of staying power as evidenced by Scream’s seven installments.

Though Scream is a series of inconsistent quality, it trends toward the positive overall. Any franchise with almost 10 movies is bound to have a few stinkers, and only a few Scream films could be called legitimately bad. The flexibility of the Ghostface iconography means there is bound to be more Scream movies very soon.

5

Child’s Play – 8 Movies

Most slasher franchises are passed from creator to creator and lack a consistent vision. This isn’t so for the legendary Child’s Play series. Except for the 2019 reboot, Don Mancini has written every film and TV show starring Chucky. This means that all the bonkers twists and turns across decades came from the same creative mind. What’s more, Brad Douriff has played the killer doll almost every time.

Though it may not have the most installments in history, Child’s Play is the only long-running slasher franchise that comes close to perfection. Every movie is good or great, and builds upon the lore established all the way back in the first movie from 1988. The series might be on hiatus for now, but Mancini has been vocal about bringing Chucky back in more movies.

4

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre – 9 Movies

"Leatherface

Leatherface angrily swings his chainsaw in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Horror is a way to deal with real-life trauma, and Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a direct reaction to the turbulent decade between 1964 and 1974. The gritty tale of young travelers and their run-in with a cannibal family is one of the scariest horror flicks ever made, and cemented Leatherface as a permanent fixture of cinematic nightmares.

When accounting for the remakes and sequels to remakes, the Texas Chainsaw franchise is nine movies long. Unfortunately, every sequel is a stumble, and it’s one of the rare long-running series without a single good follow-up. With plans in place to bring Leatherface back for his 10th movie, maybe the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise can finally live up to the stellar original.

3

A Nightmare On Elm Street – 9 Movies

"Freddy

Freddy Krueger stands silhouetted in a dark hallway in A Nightmare On Elm Street

With his wise-cracks and abundant personality, Freddy Krueger is nothing like most slasher icons. What’s more, A Nightmare on Elm Street is nothing like the usual classic slasher film because it integrates elements of the supernatural to dream up new ways to scare the viewer. The 1984 film is a gem on its own, and the Elm Street franchise is pretty strong too.

Across his nine movies, Freddy Krueger has been played by Robert Englund all but once. Englund’s performance is the secret ingredient that makes everything work. Though the franchise is certainly hit-or-miss, the imaginative nature of the franchise allows for flexibility even in its weaker installments. It’s unclear if Freddy is really gone for good this time.

2

Friday The 13th – 12 Movies

"Jason

Jason Voorhees looms in a darkened doorway in Friday the 13th: The New Blood

In the 12 Friday the 13th movies, Jason has killed dozens of victims, gone to hell, gone to space, and even fought Freddy Krueger in an epic crossover. What started as a quaint mystery slasher in 1980 has grown into the quintessential horror series that every successor has borrowed from. Friday the 13th is the standard by which other slasher franchises are judged.

Even though the series is noted for having plenty of awful installments, the entire picture tells a different story. Friday the 13th is fun and endlessly entertaining, despite having an inconsistent timeline and almost no quality control. Plans are already in place to bring Jason back again, and the series is destined to hit the satisfying benchmark of 13 movies eventually.

1

Halloween – 13 Movies

"Michael

Michael Myers Holding a Knife in Halloween (2018)

John Carpenter’s Halloween is the first truly modern slasher, and it has a ton of sequels. Michael Myers and his stoic white mask have appeared in 13 movies (including Halloween 3 where he makes a cameo) and the franchise has reset its timeline repeatedly over the years. Direct sequels, reboots, and remakes abound.

It could be argued that Halloween is the best slasher franchise, but there’s no debate that it’s the longest-running. Amazingly, there have been Halloween movies in every decade since the 1970s, a feat that no other horror franchise has matched. Each era of the franchise is radically different, so it’s hardly consistent. By the metric of longevity, Halloween is in exclusive company.

These terrifying slasher movie franchises are the best of all time, but which of the classic horror series…

[27
146,85,46,397
post-434461","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-movies","tag-entertainment","tag-il","tag-israel","tag-movies
["GET
