{"id":435216,"date":"2026-05-10T19:55:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-10T19:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/435216\/"},"modified":"2026-05-10T19:55:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-10T19:55:09","slug":"chatgpt-is-saying-vweird-things-in-chinese","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/435216\/","title":{"rendered":"ChatGPT Is Saying VWeird Things in Chinese"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Sign up to see the future, today<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Can\u2019t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech<\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-incontent-excluded article-paragraph skip\">If you thought English-language ChatGPT-prose was annoying, just wait until you get a load of its conversational habits in Chinese.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">A fascinating piece of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/chatgpt-chinese-catch-you-steadily-sycophancy\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reporting by Wired<\/a> took a look at how ChatGPT handles Chinese, the global language with the highest number of native speakers, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middlebury.edu\/language-schools\/blog\/what-are-most-popular-languages-world\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Language School at Middlebury College<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">One of its go-to tics, the publication reports, is to answer questions with \u201c\u6211\u4f1a\u7a33\u7a33\u5730\u63a5\u4f4f\u4f60,\u201d which literally translates to \u201cI will catch you steadily,\u201d a phrase signalling willingness to talk about a person\u2019s feelings (as Wired\u2019s Zeyi Yang notes, a more flowerly translation could be \u201cI\u2019ll hold you steadily through whatever comes,\u201d though the sentiment is apparently irritating to Chinese speakers either way.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">At other times, ChatGPT will tell its Chinese users \u201c\u780d\u4e00\u5200,\u201d which means either \u201chelp me cut it once,\u201d or \u201cslash the price,\u201d an obnoxious bit of ad copy parroted by Chinese eCommerce platform Pinduoduo, Wired notes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The odd mannerisms are so ubiquitous that they\u2019ve become a meme among Chinese netizens, with some depicting ChatGPT as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@baldric_amour_world\/post\/DVBzX79kxx3?xmt=AQG0u4OmvaRAlHuUFbKztBYgTJ979vm96hUF-pDsK-IDBQ\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">giant inflatable airbag<\/a> placed to break someone\u2019s fall \u2014 catching them steadily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The problem, Wired observes, may come down to a phenomenon called \u201cmode collapse,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/html\/2510.01171v1\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fundamental bias<\/a> tracing back to the people training large language models (LLMs). Basically, the idea goes that when human data annotators comb through text to train AI chatbots, they unknowingly favor familiar turns-of-phrase over more foreign-sounding sentences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">After an LLM like ChatGPT is trained, it becomes difficult to force it to \u201cunlearn\u201d certain phrases.
