About <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/MVMS-HealthProfessional\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one-third<\/a> of adults take them, and many doctors recommend them for some children and other specific groups.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">But several recent <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1007\/s00394-011-0224-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">studies<\/a> have <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1093\/aje\/kwq447\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found<\/a> that multivitamins <a href=\"https:\/\/jama.jamanetwork.com\/article.aspx?doi=10.1001\/archinternmed.2008.540&amp;utm_campaign=articlePDF%26utm_medium%3DarticlePDFlink%26utm_source%3DarticlePDF%26utm_content%3Djamanetworkopen.2024.18729\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">don\u2019t actually improve<\/a> health outcomes\u2014with a few exceptions\u2014and pills with too much \u201cnutrition\u201d might even backfire. Here\u2019s what to know about multivitamins: when they\u2019ll likely help, harm, or do absolutely nothing. <\/p>\n<p>Multivitamins vs. nutrition<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">A daily multivitamin probably <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2820375\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">won\u2019t be your savior<\/a>. The bedrocks of healthy behavior are your biggest assets for staying disease-free. \u201cDiet, exercise, and other healthy lifestyle habits matter the most,\u201d says Howard Sesso, associate professor of epidemiology at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, who has studied people\u2019s health outcomes when they take multivitamins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mb-0 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">So-called \u201cbroad-based\u201d multivitamins combine a wide range of micronutrients, with typically around 13 essential vitamins like A, C, and D, and up to 15 minerals like calcium, magnesium, and zinc. Other multivitamins focus on fewer nutrients for specific needs like bone or skin health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">But humans evolved to get their nutrition from real food, which has major advantages over pills. For one thing, food packages nutrition with fats, enhancing <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8335406\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">absorption<\/a>. Many healthy foods also contain complex antioxidants like polyphenols, which <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11672929\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">help preserve vitamins<\/a> inside the body as they work their good deeds. In 2022, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org\/uspstf\/sites\/default\/files\/file\/supporting_documents\/vitamins-multivitamins-mineral-suppl-cvd-cancer-prev-bulletin.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concluded<\/a> there isn\u2019t enough evidence to justify recommending their use for disease prevention among healthy people who don\u2019t have any special nutrient requirements.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">When Sesso studied male physicians taking daily multivitamins for more than a decade through a large, carefully controlled trial, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/daily-multivitamin-multimineral-may-help-protect-against-cancer-201210175419\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found<\/a> they didn\u2019t help with fending off heart disease or earlier death, but they were linked to some reductions in cancer and <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3946650\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cataracts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Last year, NIH researchers found that regular multivitamins <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2820369\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">didn\u2019t improve longevity<\/a> across nearly 400,000 healthy adults. However, the researchers noted that a handful of other <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1007\/s00394-022-02865-4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">studies<\/a> have shown <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1093\/aje\/kwp167\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">certain benefits<\/a>, and more research is needed to understand how these pills affect specific groups of people.<\/p>\n<p>Who might benefit?<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">One such group is seniors. \u201cWe know that some nutritional deficiencies are more likely to develop in older people,\u201d Sesso says. The most frequent examples are <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7304087\/vitamin-b12-supplement-food\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vitamin B12<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7288858\/should-i-take-vitamin-d-supplement\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vitamin D<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mb-0 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">In a 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38244989\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trial<\/a> of about 5,000 older adults, Sesso and colleagues found that multivitamin use led to enhanced memory and delayed cognitive aging by two years. Broad-based multivitamins contain essential vitamins and minerals that \u201ctarget multiple biological pathways to support cognitive health,\u201d Sesso and his co-authors wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">In the same trial but with an even bigger group of seniors, multivitamin-takers were also less likely to get lung cancer, but no benefits were observed for other cancers or heart disease. Some of Sesso\u2019s research\u2014including this trial\u2014receives company funding, but he designs the studies without company input. They\u2019re more likely among those with low-calorie diets, poor appetite due to chronic illness, or little access to healthy food. Food-insecure adults may have <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36904074\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">better health outcomes<\/a> when they\u2019re taking multivitamins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mb-0 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Strict vegetarians or vegans may miss out on certain vitamins and minerals. For them, \u201ctaking a multivitamin could be advantageous,\u201d Lopez-Neyman says. She adds that multivitamins can also help pregnant women. They\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/faqs\/nutrition-during-pregnancy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">advised<\/a> to take multivitamins due to a higher risk of deficiencies in nutrients such as folate and iron. <\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Multivitamins could be useful during periods of chronic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/news\/20241008\/Can-multivitamins-improve-mood-and-reduce-stress-in-older-adults.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stress<\/a> and sleep deprivation, such as rough stretches at work or school. These circumstances may interfere with cooking nutritious meals, and stress can sap immunity. Multivitamins could, in theory, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.physiology.org\/doi\/full\/10.1152\/ajpregu.00168.2024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">help<\/a> with both <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7468989\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">issues<\/a>. \u201cIf you\u2019ve been struggling to eat a varied diet for six months or longer, it\u2019s a good time to check in with your doctor or dietitian,\u201d says Raedeh Basiri, assistant professor of nutrition and food studies at George Mason University. <\/p>\n<p>Multivitamins and kids<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Pediatricians may recommend multivitamins for kids because their bodies are continuously developing, \u201crequiring a steady supply of essential nutrients to support physical and mental milestones,\u201d Lopez-Neyman says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mb-0 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">She adds, though, that the American Academy of Pediatricians <a href=\"https:\/\/share.upmc.com\/2023\/03\/does-my-child-need-to-take-vitamins\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">doesn\u2019t advise multivitamins<\/a> for children who eat reasonably well. That&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2212267213016092\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">largely<\/a> because packaged foods fortified with vitamins and minerals boost their micronutrient intake. \u201cTheir bodies should learn how to get what they need from food,\u201d Basiri says. \u201cThat has been the case for thousands of years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Exceptions are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/infant-toddler-nutrition\/vitamins-minerals\/vitamin-d.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vitamin D<\/a>, especially for infants, and a few minerals like <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8002201\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">iron and calcium<\/a>. Both children and adults of all ages have some risk of not getting enough of these critical nutrients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Specialized multivitamins<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text mb-6 self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Talk with doctors or dietitians to learn more. They can order tests to uncover any deficiencies, in which case a broad-based multivitamin may help. Whether taking a broad-based or specialized multivitamin, talk to your doctor or dietitian about your individual nutrition needs. Even at lower percentages, many nutrients <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10600480\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">amplify each other<\/a>, collaborating inside the body to potentially provide 100% of your needs. \u201cNature works together in certain patterns,\u201d Bock says. \u201cIt\u2019s the same with vitamins and nutrients in food.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-text self-baseline font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mb-0 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">Bock adds that too much of certain nutrients may undermine others.
