{"id":439945,"date":"2026-05-13T17:21:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T17:21:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/439945\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T17:21:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T17:21:10","slug":"lasers-shine-a-new-light-on-the-space-junk-air-pollution-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/439945\/","title":{"rendered":"Lasers shine a new light on the space junk air pollution problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-09691157-f49a-453e-8c34-cc61666c73cb\">Scientists are using a new technique to study incoming space debris and its effects on Earth&#8217;s atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>Observational evidence is being gathered that the ablation of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/kessler-syndrome-space-debris\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/kessler-syndrome-space-debris\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/kessler-syndrome-space-debris\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space debris<\/a> can be detected by ground-based light detection and ranging (LiDAR), a remote-sensing technology that uses laser beams to measure precise distances and movement in an environment, in real time.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-09691157-f49a-453e-8c34-cc61666c73cb-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Last year, for the first time, a lithium cloud in the upper atmosphere was linked to the reentry of a rocket stage. This event took place on Feb. 19-20, 2025 with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/scientists-measure-air-pollution-from-reentering-spacex-rocket-in-real-time-its-never-been-done-before\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/scientists-measure-air-pollution-from-reentering-spacex-rocket-in-real-time-its-never-been-done-before\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/scientists-measure-air-pollution-from-reentering-spacex-rocket-in-real-time-its-never-been-done-before\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">detection of a lithium cloud<\/a> 10 times higher than is typical. Back-trajectory analysis indicated the lidar-probed air mass originated from a location west of Ireland that coincided with the atmospheric reentry of a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> Falcon 9 upper stage.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>    <a id=\"elk-8bcc05fc-a596-4fe4-8b34-bacffddce0c0\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Anthropogenic impacts<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-e2e492d1-ae19-4dcf-8409-103c87ed8431\">&#8220;Lithium is a crucial species for investigating anthropogenic impacts on the middle atmosphere because of its extensive use in the space industry,&#8221; reported Michael Gerding, a scientist in the optical and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29295-rocket-history.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29295-rocket-history.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29295-rocket-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rocket<\/a> soundings department of the Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) at the University of Rostock in K\u00fchlungsborn, Germany.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ablation of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/incoming-1-300-pound-nasa-satellite-will-crash-to-earth-on-march-10\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/incoming-1-300-pound-nasa-satellite-will-crash-to-earth-on-march-10\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/incoming-1-300-pound-nasa-satellite-will-crash-to-earth-on-march-10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reentering satellites<\/a> and rocket stages is expected to become a significant source of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/satellites-are-polluting-earths-atmosphere-with-heavy-metals-could-refueling-them-in-orbit-help\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/satellites-are-polluting-earths-atmosphere-with-heavy-metals-could-refueling-them-in-orbit-help\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/satellites-are-polluting-earths-atmosphere-with-heavy-metals-could-refueling-them-in-orbit-help\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">metals in the mesosphere<\/a>, yet systematic observations remain limited so far,&#8221; Gerding reported at the 2026 European Geosciences Union, which was held May 3-8 in Vienna.<\/p>\n<p>Gerding also showed the first results of IAP&#8217;s new three-channel multi-species lidar that&#8217;s set up to search for different materials expected to be ablated by reentering space debris. These materials include copper, aluminum oxide, and hydrogen fluoride, which is used as a propellant in some rocket engines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These materials, which naturally occur only in trace amounts at such altitudes, are influencing the mesosphere and upper stratosphere to an extent not previously documented. (Image credit: Robin Wing, et al.\/Communications Earth &amp; Environment)<a id=\"elk-fe0d6bc2-fb88-4dcf-a096-2d24f70096b6\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Space waste<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-08da1c2f-b0fe-4cd3-a623-691b0b665e6d\">Leonard Schulz is a researcher at the Technische Universit\u00e4t Braunschweig&#8217;s Institute of Geophysics and Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0273117726003509?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0273117726003509?via%3Dihub\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> published in the May 1 issue of the journal Advances in Space Research, Schulz and colleagues pointed out that incoming &#8220;space waste&#8221; is injecting a significant amount of its matter into the mesosphere and lower thermosphere \u2014 enough to cause <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/megaconstellations-threat-to-ozone-layer-recovery\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/megaconstellations-threat-to-ozone-layer-recovery\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/megaconstellations-threat-to-ozone-layer-recovery\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concern for Earth&#8217;s ozone layer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is a need for dedicated searches for space waste that survived reentry and impacted ground, detailed observations of space waste ablation, and further ground experiments representative of the conditions of atmosphere reentry,&#8221; Schulz and team members wrote in the study.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today&#8217;s large satellite constellations amplify the problem of on-orbit space debris as well as the ground risk from impacts,&#8221; the researchers added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Beside these well-discussed problems,&#8221; they concluded, the new findings &#8220;indicate a substantial risk associated with space waste reentry and possible effects on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a> and thus the human habitat.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Scientists are using a new technique to study incoming space debris and its effects on Earth&#8217;s atmosphere.
