Two Department of Homeland Security officials said that federal officers and agents who arrest immigrants as part of their work with ICE \u201cmay be at\u202fFIFA World Cup matches\u201d\u202fwhen the international tournament begins next month, according to Julia Ainsley of NBCNEWS.com. The officials said that the agency is offering its \u201cpersonnel to local police departments and federal agencies to provide extra security around the perimeters of games,\u201d similar to Homeland Security\u2019s role at the Super Bowl and the Kentucky Derby. It is \u201cunclear whether any departments or agencies are taking ICE up on the offer.\u201d The officials added that ICE officers and agents providing security \u201cwon\u2019t be checking spectators or employees for immigration status.\u201d The officials said that ICE personnel \u201chaven\u2019t been expressly prohibited from making arrests at World Cup matches.\u201d The sources noted that no guidance has \u201cgone out inside the agency instructing ICE officers engaged in immigration enforcement to steer clear\u201d of World Cup stadiums. The presence of ICE<\/a> \u201ccould make some spectators avoid the games\u201d (NBCNEWS.com, 5\/13<\/a>). A spokesperson for the department said, \u201cInternational visitors who legally come to the United States for the World Cup have nothing to worry about.\u201d The DHS added, \u201cForeign visitors MUST be proactive and should start working on their travel plans and documents well ahead of time to ensure a smooth travel experience\u201d (THE HILL, 5\/13<\/a>).<\/p>\n
