Trouble has arrived in The Hardacres and the family may not even realise it just yet. Channel 5’s period drama returned to screens this Thursday (14 May) for its second season<\/a>, picking up with the Hardacre clan as they continue adjusting to their dramatic rise from poverty to privilege. But while wealth had brought fresh opportunities, it’s also attracted a new enemy who could prove more dangerous than anyone they’ve ever faced.<\/p>\n

Tonight’s opener showed the family embracing a more ambitious future as modernity begins sweeping through the country. Sam Hardacre, always keen to stay one step ahead, proposed expanding the family brand by transforming their fried herring shops into general stores in a bid to protect profits amid fears of a recession. <\/p>\n

Yet while Sam planned for the future, resentment continued to simmer elsewhere. Lady Emma Fitzherbert remained deeply uncomfortable with the family continued rise, still unable to accept the idea of outsiders climbing into a world she believes should remain reserved to the privileged few. But her hostility became the least of her everyone’s problems when her mother, Lady Imelda Hansen, paid her a surprise visit. <\/p>\n

Played by newcomer Michele Dotrice<\/a>, Imelda made her first appearance in tonight’s episode and instantly unsettled those around her \u2013 including her own daughter. Emma was visibly desperate to see her mother leave as quickly as possible, suggesting there is far more history between both characters. In an attempt to manage the situation, Emma hosted a garden party, only for Imelda to insist the Hardacre family be invited. <\/p>\n

At first, the meeting seemed surprisingly cordial. Imelda charmed the family on arrival, quickly presenting herself as warm, welcoming and even eager to heal divisions. She encouraged Emma and Mary towards a truce, creating the impression that she may be the one person capable of ending the feud between their two households. But her mask fell with a loud thud. <\/p>\n

Once the Hardacres were gone, Imelda revealed her true feelings in a chilling final scene, vowing to teach the family a lesson about class and social standing. If tonight’s episode established anything, it is that Imelda isn’t just another snobbish aristocrat. She is something far more dangerous, particularly as she’s willing to play the long game. <\/p>\n

Michele Dotrice has warned her character is worried about her granddaughter\u2019s future – a firm motivation for her to go against the Hardacre clan<\/p>\n

“She is old school. She hasn\u2019t moved with the times and firmly believes in old money and old heritage,” Michele said about her character prior to season 2’s release. “Consequently, she\u2019s very worried about the prospects for her granddaughter, and that she should be married into the right society, to the right person, all of that. Then she comes up against these Hardacres, who she cannot abide because they are nouveau riche. This is against everything that she stands for.” <\/p>\n

Michele has warned viewers that Imelda isn\u2019t to be underestimated. “She is a master manipulator but she has a nice side to her, she\u2019s not all bad,” she said. “She is particularly dreadful to her daughter. It\u2019s appalling what she does to the family, but in her mind, she\u2019s absolutely correct. She comes in like a hurricane and mixes up the whole aspect of the family.”<\/p>\n

This could be disastrous for the Hardacres. Unlike Emma, whose dislike for the family is more than obvious, Imelda appears far more calculating. She understands the value of charm, knows how to draw people in and seems highly skilled at encouraging others to reveal more than they should. Even Emma recognised her mother’s tendency to share stories simply to coax secrets out of those around her. <\/p>\n

Michele Dotrice isn\u2019t the only new face in the series inspired by CL Skelton\u2019s novels. The cast, fronted by Claire Cooper and Liam McMahon as Mary and Sam, has welcomed the likes of Niall McNamee (seen in Saipan, Bad Sisters) and Edward Mitchell (Zack Snyder\u2019s Justice League). The pair portray new characters Edward Blackwood (McNamee) and Arthur Lewis (Mitchell). <\/p>\n

The Hardacres airs every Thursday on 5 at 9pm. <\/p>\n
