With LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT\u2019s Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay<\/a>) facing pressure from her new boss, Chief Tynan (Noma Dumezweni), all season\u2014and then staring at a potential suspension after she refused to betray a survivor\u2019s confidence and was held in contempt\u2014the SVU vet was pondering in the final episodes of season 27 if her future was still with the NYPD.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I came back onto the show [at the start of season 27], one of my questions\u2014it is sort of a meta question, too\u2014[was], wow, 27 seasons,\u201d SVU showrunner Michele Fazekas<\/a> tells Give Me My Remote<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cAnd for Mariska, it\u2019s 27 years on the same show. So, it\u2019s sort of a natural question. And there\u2019s a line in the first episode of the season where Benson says to Fin, \u2018Listen, I know we\u2019re closer to the end of the beginning.\u2019 And I find that a really interesting place to be for anybody\u2014for Benson, and for Mariska, and for all of us.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I wanted to use this season to explore that, and to explore Benson, looking at her life and her job, and being like, \u2018How much longer am I doing this?\u2019\u201d she continues. \u201cAnd so I think [at] the end of this season, it culminates, in a lot of ways, [with] her recommitting. It\u2019s like, \u2018No, I am here. I am here because I can be nowhere else.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

In a full-circle moment, a conversation with Fin (Ice T) in the finale also proved to be a turning point for the captain.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat scene that she has with Fin in the finale, where\u2026he\u2019s joking with her, but it\u2019s also kind of how he takes care of her,\u201d Fazekas points out. \u201cLike, he can see that she\u2019s going through it, and he can see that\u2026this bad guy in this episode is really messing with her. And so when he says, \u2018Oh yeah, by the way, I\u2019ve totally revised my opinion on that. I\u2019m never going to retire.\u2019 And [then] he says, \u2018And I\u2019m never going to die.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was there when we shot that scene, and initially, when they did it, they did it more like a joke,\u201d she continues. \u201cAnd my note to [director] Brenna Malloy<\/a>, and to Mariska and Ice, was, \u2018Do that line softer. \u2018I\u2019m never gonna die.\u2019\u2014that\u2019s not a joke. It\u2019s obviously not real, but he\u2019s doing that to take care of her, and she really takes that in. And so for both of them, it\u2019s like, we\u2019re here, we\u2019re in it till the end. So that\u2019s kind of the story we told throughout the season of her sort of looking at her life and looking at her job, and by the end being like, \u2018Nope, I don\u2019t have any questions about that anymore. I\u2019m here until I can\u2019t be here anymore.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Fin has been Benson\u2019s closest ally for years, but Ice T\u2019s role was majorly scaled down in season 27. Additionally, the show cut two Latine series regulars between seasons 26 and 27<\/a>, and the rotating cast members meant that multiple episodes featured only white regular cast members. \u201cI think it is always important to have diversity and to show [that],\u201d Fazekas says of plans to fix that in the future. (The casting decisions were made before the show got its official season 27 renewal.) \u201cWith Ice T, I think the nice thing is we\u2019ve been able to change that so he can be back much more regularly than he was. And that was a decision that was made before I started. So we\u2019ve rectified that. But, yeah, I think [having an inclusive cast is] always an important thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside of that, \u201cthe sort of core group, not making any changes,\u201d she says about the season 28 cast.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As for former regular Octavio Pisano, whose Velasco popped up a few times after he left this year<\/a>, \u201cI would love to have him back,\u201d Fazekas says. \u201cWe don\u2019t have any specific plans, but certainly it\u2019s in my head of, again, bringing him back when we can tell a really good story, and not just drop him in. Like, I really liked how he came in to give Benson a pep talk<\/a>. Like, I thought that was a great little moment between them.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the finale, Benson was ultimately able to get one over on Tynan, thanks to Griffin (Corey Cott<\/a>) taping the chief\u2019s confession about what she and Griff\u2019s father did back in the day. Now that Tynan knows she can\u2019t come after Benson, \u201cwe\u2019ve sort of told that story,\u201d Fazekas says. \u201cI love Noma. I would work with Noma on anything. I don\u2019t have any specific plans to bring her back, but I left it open for a reason. And if there are other stories to tell with her, she\u2019s so great.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very funny how it came about that she was on the show: I had written the character, Tynan, not with anybody in mind,\u201d she continues. \u201cAnd I was on a Zoom with everybody\u2014we were talking about it\u2014including Mariska, and we were talking about who could be Tynan. And she was like, \u2018Oh my gosh, I met this actress\u2019\u2026and she, like, sort of described her. And I go, \u2018Wait, is she on MURDERBOT?\u2019\u2026because I had just seen MURDERBOT. I was like, \u2018I love this woman. Who is she?\u2019 So it was a crazy little bit of serendipity, and she happened to be available. So I love her. She makes everybody better in the scene; Mariska loves acting with her. So, seriously, I\u2019m not closing the door on that. I don\u2019t have a specific plan, and I don\u2019t feel like that particular story needs to continue, but I think she\u2019s terrific.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tynan spent a lot of resources digging into Benson\u2019s past, and specifically held on to one file Griff gave her, but the showrunner confirms Tynan didn\u2019t have a specific case, or incident, in mind that she was investigating.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was just looking for leverage against Benson in any way that she could,\u201d Fazekas says. \u201cAnd then when Benson gets held in contempt, [Tynan]\u2019s like, \u2018Great, I gotcha.\u2019 So there was no specific file that she was looking for. She was just like, \u2018Let\u2019s look for any little mistake she\u2019s made. We\u2019re going to comb through 27 years of your career.\u2019 And, of course, there\u2019s going to be mistakes. But then she takes advantage of, \u2018Oh, you got called in contempt. Great. I\u2019m going to use that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

But will Benson still be facing a suspension? \u201cI think what will happen is by the time we start the new season, that will have been settled,\u201d Fazekas says. \u201cSo it will not be a factor at the top of the season.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though planning for season 28 is still in the early days, Fazekas notes the plan is to likely do another longer arc. \u201cI don\u2019t know what it is yet, but what I liked about Tynan\u2026I always like a theme,\u201d she says. \u201cSometimes themes get, like, real heavy-handed, but I always like to find what is the theme for the season? And so we\u2019re kicking some stuff around. Our writers\u2019 room starts next week\u2026 I don\u2019t necessarily need a Big Bad, but I do like a theme. And what is the story we\u2019re telling in the season?\u201d<\/p>\n

Fazekas is also looking at the big picture for the iconic series, too. \u201cAnd then, as we\u2019re aiming for whenever this show concludes\u2026I always have to have that in my head,\u201d she says. \u201cWe don\u2019t have an end date. But ideally we could plan, \u2018How do we want to wrap up this huge epic TV show?\u2019 and be really mindful of that.\u201d<\/p>\n
