Sam Heughan knows \u201cOutlander\u201d fans are wondering what happened to his character, Jamie, after that series finale<\/a>, and he has thoughts.<\/p>\n

The Starz series ended its eight-season run on May 15 with a finale that saw Jamie getting shot (and presumably killed) by Major Patrick Ferguson during a battle.<\/p>\n

Earlier on in the season, Jamie read a book from a future and learned he was fated to die in the battle. He, along with viewers, likely assumed he was a goner.<\/p>\n

But the end of the finale complicates things. Claire (Caitriona Balfe) sits with Jamie on the battlefield after he\u2019s been shot. Her hair turns bright white then and there \u2014 seeming to confirm a prophecy that said when her hair turned white, she would come into her healing powers.<\/p>\n

The episode ends with Jamie and Claire gasping for air. Was Claire able to heal her husband?<\/p>\n

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly<\/a>, Heughan was asked to share his interpretation of the finale.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if I fully understand it. There was, I believe, an element of Claire having a power. It goes back to her being la dame blanche, this white witch. She brings the child back to life earlier. There\u2019s the Faith<\/a> of it all. Her hair changes color using her special ability,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Heughan then said he thinks the writers \u201cchanged their minds\u201d on how to present the story.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my head, or the way I\u2019m interpreting it, is it\u2019s really up to the fans, whether they\u2019re alive again together. They\u2019re, of course, always together. But are they alive in this world or in the next?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

If Heughan had his way, the characters would be \u201calive together.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI think them even waking up on the standing stone itself might signify that perhaps they\u2019re somewhere else,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

If Jamie and Claire are alive, Heughan said he hopes they\u2019re in a \u201cnice, peaceful place.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve done their battles. They\u2019ve made amends. For me, I think the story stops there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Heughan told The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> that the ending was originally more clear-cut.<\/p>\n

\u201cInitially, they wanted to make it quite clear that she used her power to bring him back to life. But, actually, it\u2019s more ambiguous the way it\u2019s been presented to us, and we don\u2019t really know whether they\u2019re alive or perhaps somewhere else,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

In his mind, they\u2019re together \u2014 either on the Earth or in the great beyond.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re lying on the main standing stone that\u2019s been through with us, that\u2019s transported Claire through time. It is cracked down the middle; it\u2019s broken. So yeah, that journey is probably over. So maybe they\u2019re together alive on Fraser\u2019s Ridge, or maybe they\u2019re together somewhere else eternally,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s important is that the characters are together in some capacity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s why season eight is quite magical. Even the (number) eight, which is the infinity sign.
