Iranian authorities outlined their latest peace proposal on Tuesday, which includes demands for ending U.S. sanctions and lifting the naval blockade of the country, several hours after President Donald Trump claimed he had called off a planned military strike on Iran to allow for ongoing \u201cserious negotiations.\u201d <\/p>\n

Iranian state media outlet IRNA<\/a> quoted Iran\u2019s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, who said the peace proposal includes \u201c the country\u2019s insistence on its right to uranium enrichment and peaceful nuclear activities.\u201d<\/p>\n Iran\u2019s proposal calls for an end to the conflict on all fronts, including Lebanon, the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade, and the lifting of \u201call unilateral sanctions.\u201d<\/p>\n The demands also call for the release of frozen Iranian funds and \u201ccompensation\u2026for damage\u201d caused during the war.<\/p>\n It is unclear if the proposal outlined by Gharibabadi has been forwarded to the U.S. but Trump last week<\/a> dismissed an earlier proposal calling it \u201ctotally unacceptable\u201d and a “piece of garbage.\u201d<\/p>\n What Do We Know About Trump Calling Off Strikes?<\/p>\n In a post on Truth Social<\/a> on Monday afternoon, the president announced he had decided to hold off on a planned military strike on Iran that was scheduled for Tuesday. Trump said he acted on the request of the leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates and claimed: \u201cserious negotiations are now taking place, and that, in their opinion\u2026a Deal will be made.\u201d The president then reiterated that this deal will ensure \u201cNO NUCLEAR WEAPONS FOR IRAN!\u201d Trump\u2019s post didn\u2019t specifically mention allowing Iran to continue nuclear enrichment, but he has previously spoken about removing the \u201cnuclear dust\u201d (enriched uranium) from the country. The president, however, warned that the military has been ordered to stay prepared to conduct a \u201cfull, large-scale assault of Iran, on a moment\u2019s notice, in the event that an acceptable Deal is not reached.\u201d<\/p>\n Tangent<\/p>\n In a press conference<\/a> later on Monday, Trump was asked about his decision to hold off on striking Iran, and he said: \u201cI put it off for a little while, hopefully, maybe forever\u201d because the Middle Eastern leaders believe \u201cthey are getting very close to making a deal.\u201d The president said this was a \u201cvery positive development, but we’ll see whether or not it amounts to anything.\u201d Trump acknowledged that there have been times when he thought they were close to a deal and it didn\u2019t work out, but added, \u201cBut this is a little bit different.\u201d <\/p>\n What To Watch For<\/p>\n Citing an unnamed senior Iranian official, Reuters reported<\/a> that the U.S. may be willing to soften some of its demands on the nuclear issue, including allowing Iran to continue some \u201cpeaceful nuclear activity under supervision \u200bof the International Atomic Energy Agency.\u201d The source also claimed that the U.S. is willing to release a quarter of the frozen funds that Iran is demanding, although the Reuters report added that this has not been confirmed by the U.S. According to Axios<\/a>, Trump is set to meet members of his national security team in the White House\u2019s Situation Room on Tuesday to \u201cdiscuss military options.\u201d<\/p>\n How Have The Markets Reacted?<\/p>\n The global crude oil benchmark Brent Crude Futures fell more than 2% to $109.70 per barrel on Tuesday.
