{"id":450406,"date":"2026-05-20T01:43:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T01:43:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/450406\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T01:43:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T01:43:08","slug":"twenty-two-years-and-15000km-later-fluke-discovery-sets-new-record-for-humpback-whale-journey-marine-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/450406\/","title":{"rendered":"Twenty-two years and 15,000km later: fluke discovery sets new record for humpback whale journey | Marine life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A humpback whale has made a 15,000km journey from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/brazil\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brazil<\/a> to Australia, marking what researchers believe is the longest distance ever documented between sightings of an individual humpback.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The whale was first photographed in 2003 at the Abrolhos Bank, Brazil\u2019s main humpback whale nursery, off the coast of the north-eastern state of Bahia. In September 2025, it was spotted again in Hervey Bay off the Queensland coast, representing a travel distance of about 15,100km.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Stephanie Stack, a PhD candidate at Griffith University and co-author of new research published in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1098\/rsos.260251\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Royal Society Open Science<\/a>, said it was \u201cextraordinary to photograph a whale that\u2019s gone this distance \u2013 it has never happened before\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis particular whale had not been sighted for 22 years, which is really remarkable in and of itself,\u201d Stack said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The whale was detected in a repository of photos on the platform <a href=\"https:\/\/happywhale.com\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Happywhale<\/a>, to which researchers and citizen scientists can contribute whale sightings. The photographs allow individual animals to be identified by their flukes \u2013 the underside of their tails.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A whale fluke is \u201cunique to each humpback whale, very similar to the way fingerprints are unique to humans,\u201d Stack said. Flukes are identifiable through their shape, patterns of black and white pigmentation, and distinctive features such as scars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Happywhale platform, co-founded by study co-author and Southern Cross University whale biologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2024\/dec\/11\/humpback-whale-makes-record-journey-of-more-than-13000km-from-south-america-to-africa\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ted Cheeseman<\/a>, uses an AI algorithm to identify matches, akin to facial recognition in humans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Another whale was photographed in Hervey Bay in 2007 and seen again in the same area in 2013. Six years later, it was spotted off the coast of S\u00e3o Paulo. The distance between these two breeding grounds is about 14,200km.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We know where it started, and we know where it ended up, but we don\u2019t know anything about what happened in between,\u2019 researchers say. Photograph: Silke Stuckenbrock<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The two whales are \u201cthe first recorded exchange in both directions\u201d between the Brazilian and eastern Australian humpback whale populations, the researchers wrote. \u201cResighting intervals of six and 22 years suggest that these are rare, possibly single-lifetime events, rather than regular migratory shifts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The study drew on 19,283 fluke photos collected between 1984 and 2025 from eastern Australia and Latin America \u2013 and the two whales accounted for \u201conly 0.01% of identified whales\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOne of the drawbacks to doing photo identification research is we only have \u2026 two points,\u201d Stack said. \u201cWe know where it started, and we know where it ended up, but we don\u2019t know anything about what happened in between.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She pointed out that the animals could have travelled farther than the straight-line distances between the Brazilian and Australian coastlines \u2013 and that it was unclear what routes they had taken to reach their destinations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The typical migration route for an Australian humpback whale is between feeding grounds in Antarctic waters and breeding grounds near the Great Barrier Reef.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cEach year, they do a full loop from feeding grounds to breeding grounds and then back again to feeding grounds,\u201d Stack said \u2013 a round trip of about 10,000km.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The discovery of the two whales\u2019 long journeys across the open ocean was \u201ca good reminder that conservation of our marine resources needs to be collaborative between nations, because these are migratory animals that move across borders and between countries\u201d, Stack said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It was \u201cvery likely\u201d that climate change would affect migration patterns in future, she said, pointing to dramatic changes in the Southern Ocean feeding grounds, with Antarctic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/jan\/27\/humpback-whales-may-be-struggling-to-breed-as-climate-crisis-depletes-food\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">krill populations<\/a> under threat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A humpback whale has made a 15,000km journey from Brazil to Australia, marking what researchers believe is the&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":450407,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[26],"tags":[85,46,141,386],"class_list":["post-450406","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wildlife","tag-il","tag-israel","tag-science","tag-wildlife"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/450406","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=450406"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/450406\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/450407"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=450406"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=450406"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=450406"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
