{"id":451603,"date":"2026-05-20T18:25:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T18:25:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/451603\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T18:25:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T18:25:09","slug":"how-team-jakey-fights-mental-health-stigma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/451603\/","title":{"rendered":"How Team Jakey fights mental health stigma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jenna Zeller remembers her brother Jake Zeller as witty, with the ability to make people feel loved, welcome and wanted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had this old soul about him, and I think he was able to make friends very easily with people,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was a great guy, a great brother, and we miss him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>24-year-old Jake Zeller took his own life in December 2013. In the days after, his family faced a decision: \u201cWhat do we tell people?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad looked at us and said, \u2018We tell people the truth,\u2019\u201d said Jenna Zeller. \u201cHe said, \u2018There&#8217;s nothing that would ever make us embarrassed or ashamed of Jake, and we&#8217;re not going to start now.\u2019 That was such a relief.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"Sam Zeller, left, and his twin brother Jake Zeller in 2012\"  width=\"880\" height=\"587\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1779301509_373_.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Courtesy of the Zeller family<\/p>\n<p>Sam Zeller, left, and his twin brother Jake Zeller in 2012<\/p>\n<p>The family\u2019s decision to speak openly about their experience led them on a mission to end the stigma around mental illness and to help improve access to mental health services. Thirteen years later, their nonprofit Team Jakey has raised more than $500,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Provident Behavioral Health in St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you donate a certain amount, they will quantify it for you and say, \u2018$10,000 will see this many patients and give them care,\u2019\u201d Jenna Zeller said. \u201cWe have touched and been able to help thousands of people in St. Louis through our donations [to] Provident Behavioral Health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The nonprofit\u2019s next fundraiser, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamjakey.org\/events\/taps-for-team-jakey\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Taps for Team Jakey,<\/a> is tomorrow afternoon at 4 Hands Brewery in downtown St. Louis. The family-friendly event will offer live music, raffles, a mobile photo booth, a magician and conversations about mental health and how to access services.<\/p>\n<p>Their annual event, Team Jakey Fest, will feature a cornhole tournament and live music from Trilogy, Steve Ewing Band and Samba Bom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re the fun aunts and uncles of mental health,\u201d said Team Jakey executive director Logan Janis. \u201cYou might come to two, three, four, five Team Jakey events, and you might not ever talk to anyone, and that&#8217;s okay,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd then you might come [back], and you&#8217;re in a group chat now \u2014 you&#8217;ve made maybe a buddy.
