Dense, durable and smooth, its mirror-like finish has long been used in the bridges and fretboards of guitars. So we have to do something \u2026 It\u2019s inevitable that we\u2019re going to run out of trees, so I\u2019m going to invest in planting trees.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2f44vt00143b5z4szz7f4o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What began in 2016 as a simple fact-finding mission has since transformed into a collaborative effort led by the CBI dubbed the Ebony Project, a partnership of businesses, local communities and scientists working to ensure the long-term prosperity of the ebony tree.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2f4j7500163b5z88pnnijj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s an effort driven by one of the project\u2019s earliest research revelations: ebony trees do not grow quickly. With saplings taking as long as 100 years to reach full maturity, the CBI devised a plan to distribute seeds among the Indigenous Baka communities that share the basin\u2019s forests with the elephants.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2f4jlb00183b5zrtagq51v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTo protect the ecosystem of the Congo Basin, you must not decree protection or put a police officer in front of each tree,\u201d CBI researcher Zac Tchoundjeu told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2f4jlb00193b5zvw05z3rr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou must involve the local population and show them what interests they have in doing this domestication because it meets their needs.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1779338835_939_the-ebony-project-c-block-v4-00-02-53-00-still001.jpg\" alt=\"Ebony's high density and durability makes it ideal for guitar fretboards.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1080\" width=\"1920\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2f4xha001b3b5zjawjhcbk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tchoundjeu\u2019s assessment touches on a tricky issue: how do you persuade people to plant seeds for trees they will never sit under?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2f4y04001d3b5zqks0hyv4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To sweeten the deal, Baka communities were offered ownership of the planted ebony trees, and were given seeds for fruit and medicinal tree seeds, including avocado and mango that grow considerably faster, giving them access to goods that could be eaten, used or sold in the short term.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2f4y04001e3b5zn383vx4p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There were other, more intangible benefits. Locals learned agricultural techniques at plant nurseries, creating jobs and transferable skills that are already benefitting the 13 partner communities the Ebony Project has worked with.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2f4y04001f3b5zf2bjz88i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt totally changed our lives,\u201d Samuel Bambo Mempong, a planter from the Baka Indigenous village of Bifolone, on the edge of the basin\u2019s Dja Faunal Reserve, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2f4y04001g3b5zb8zrbd91@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt gave me knowledge that I did not have. I\u2019m also going to train other people elsewhere and by doing that, I am coming back with the benefits.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp2f4y04001h3b5zxk4jsps2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe money is going to your descendants,\u201d Mempong said.
