An animal-lover who was lucky enough to spot a\u00a0platypus<\/a>\u00a0near Brisbane, Australia, has shared the clues to look for if you want to see one of these rare\u00a0monotremes<\/a>\u00a0(egg-laying mammals).<\/p>\n

Digital creator\u00a0Jolin Tan<\/a>\u00a0visited the platypus viewing platform in\u00a0Maleny<\/a>\u00a0several times in the hope of seeing one of these peculiar animals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tan shared an adorable video of one of her sightings on\u00a0Instagram<\/a>. In the footage, the platypus can be seen swimming through the water before flapping its front foot \u2013 in what looks like a little wave \u2013 and disappearing below the surface.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Although these strange creatures are usually spotted at dusk and dawn, Tan has also seen some during the daytime, \u201cdoing their little zoomies and duck dives,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wildlife-lovers in Australia should look out for certain things if they\u2019re hoping to see a platypus in Maleny, she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The first is bubbles. \u201cThe platypus often digs around the bottom of the lake to agitate the sediment as a form of foraging for aquatic invertebrates,\u201d Tan explains. The second thing she looks out for is ripples in the water as the platypus repeatedly duck dives in the water.<\/p>\n

Seeing platypuses in the water is an enchanting experience. These weird animals are only found in Australia and are categorised as\u00a0\u2019Near Threatened\u2019<\/a>\u00a0by the IUCN Red List.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAustralia is seriously such an incredible place with all of this native wildlife,\u201d says Tan.\u00a0<\/p>\n
