Investing.com — Mediators are urgently working to draft a framework agreement to head off fresh U.S. and Israeli military strikes against Iran, which could occur within days without a diplomatic breakthrough, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal on Friday.

Pakistan and other regional intermediaries are actively attempting to bridge severe structural gaps between Washington’s core demands and Tehran’s strategic objectives.

The immediate goal is not a formal treaty, but a memorandum of understanding or letter of intent to extend the current pause in fighting and establish parameters for subsequent, deeper negotiations.

The primary diplomatic impasse centers on which issues must be integrated into the immediate framework and which can be deferred.

Washington demands that Iran commit to a lengthy suspension of its uranium enrichment program and surrender its stockpile of near-weapons-grade fissile material.

Conversely, Tehran seeks a comprehensive end to the war, the lifting of regional maritime blockades, and immediate financial relief, without making upfront nuclear concessions.

Failure to establish a limited framework could prompt the U.S. and Israel to initiate targeted airstrikes within days. The proposed strikes would primarily target economic infrastructure, including energy facilities, to pressure the Iranian regime.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has conversely warned of broad regional and extra-regional retaliation against any fresh bombardments.

President Donald Trump convened a meeting of top national security officials on Friday morning to evaluate military and diplomatic options.

While no formal decision was reached, U.S. officials indicated that the president wishes to grant the diplomatic process more time to operate following a briefing on the ongoing talks in Tehran.

However, officials noted that military strikes have not been foreclosed if negotiations fail to yield a favorable outcome.

Signaling the critical nature of the current juncture, Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir and a Qatari negotiating team have arrived in Tehran to push the framework forward.

Concurrently, Saudi Arabia has warned Iran that a failure to secure an agreement now could trigger catastrophic regional escalation.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted on Friday that while “slight progress” has been detected in ongoing conversations, Washington maintains that any viable resolution must fundamentally address Iran’s capacity to enrich and stockpile uranium.
