After a season filled with frustration, inconsistency, tactical confusion, and growing supporter unrest, Liverpool arrives at the final day of the Premier League campaign with one overriding objective already nearly secured—Champions League qualification.

Barring an extraordinary collapse in goal difference, the Reds should finish inside the top five. With a six-goal cushion over Bournemouth, it would require a bizarre set of results for Liverpool to miss out on Europe’s premier competition.

And yet, despite that likely outcome, there is no sense of celebration surrounding Anfield. Instead, this feels like the end of something.

As Brentford travel to Merseyside for the final game of the season, the expectation around much of the fanbase is that this will represent Arne Slot’s final match as Liverpool head coach. The belief, patience, and optimism that once surrounded the Dutchman have almost entirely evaporated after a season that has spiralled badly away from expectations.

The atmosphere at Anfield may therefore feel less like a finale and more like a farewell.

Liverpool: One Last Performance Before the Curtain Falls?

Liverpool’s campaign has become defined by repetition.

Poor defensive spacing. Passive periods in games. Midfield instability. A lack of cohesion in possession. Week after week, the same issues have resurfaced and the recent heavy defeats against elite opposition only accelerated the growing feeling that this project has stalled beyond repair.

Even with Champions League qualification likely secured, the manner of Liverpool’s performances has left supporters deeply unconvinced.

That is why this game carries unusual weight.

Not because of the table, but because of what it may symbolise. If this is indeed Slot’s final afternoon in charge, supporters will want to see at least one convincing display before a summer that increasingly feels destined to bring major change behind the scenes.

The key figures remain obvious.

Dominik Szoboszlai has been Liverpool’s outstanding player this season and will once again be expected to drive the intensity through midfield. Rio Ngumoha continues to provide excitement and unpredictability whenever he plays, while Florian Wirtz still searches for the kind of dominant performance that can truly ignite his Liverpool career heading into next season.

Virgil van Dijk’s leadership will again be crucial, especially against a Brentford side that thrives on physicality, transitions, and attacking set pieces.

But more than tactics or systems, this game feels emotional.

The supporters are exhausted. The players often look drained. And the constant speculation surrounding the future of the manager has created an atmosphere of uncertainty that has lingered for months.

Liverpool needs to finish the season with dignity.

Brentford: Dangerous Opponents With Nothing to Fear

Brentford arrive at Anfield with far less pressure and potentially far more freedom.

They remain one of the league’s most awkward opponents—physically aggressive, tactically organised, and always capable of punishing defensive lapses. Against a Liverpool side that has struggled badly with transitions and second balls throughout the season, Brentford will absolutely believe opportunities will come.

And if Liverpool begin nervously, the crowd could quickly become restless.

That has become a recurring theme during this difficult campaign. Anxiety spreads from the pitch into the stands and back again. Brentford will look to frustrate early and exploit any emotional fragility within the home side.

This is not a fixture Liverpool can simply coast through.

Brentford are too disciplined for that.

Predicted Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1)

GK – Giorgi Mamardashvili

RB – Curtis Jones

CB – Ibrahima Konaté

CB – Virgil van Dijk (c)

LB – Andy Robertson

CM – Alexis Mac Allister

CM – Ryan Gravenberch

AM – Dominik Szoboszlai

RW – Florian Wirtz

LW – Rio Ngumoha
