The S&P 500<\/a> rose on Tuesday, led by technology, as traders weighed the prospects of a potential U.S.-Iran deal being reached to end the war.<\/p>\n The broad market index gained 0.8%, and the Nasdaq Composite<\/a> advanced 1.3%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average<\/a> traded around the flatline. U.S. stock markets were closed Monday due to the Memorial Day holiday.<\/p>\n Shares of Micron Technology<\/a> jumped 15% amid bullishness among analysts on the Street. UBS in particular sees more than 100% upside<\/a> ahead for the stock, citing benefits from its long-term agreements. The name finished last week with a sizable gain, though it started off the period with losses amid a broader sell-off in memory chip names<\/a>.<\/p>\n Fellow memory chip stocks Seagate Technology<\/a> and Western Digital<\/a> followed Micron higher, gaining 3% and 8%, respectively. The Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM)<\/a> added 12%.<\/p>\n President Donald Trump<\/a> said Monday that talks with Iran to end the war were “proceeding nicely.” That said, he did warn the U.S. could go on the offensive if negotiations break down. <\/p>\n On top of that, the U.S. said it conducted “self defense” strikes in southern Iran early Tuesday. Some of those targets included missile launch sites and Iranian boats attempting to place mines, U.S. Central Command spokesman Tim Hawkins said. He added that the U.S. used “restraint during the ongoing ceasefire” between the two countries. <\/p>\n U.S. crude came off its lows following the strikes, with West Texas Intermediate<\/a> futures for July trading 2% lower to $93 per barrel. Brent, meanwhile, traded 4% higher on the day at $100 per barrel. <\/p>\n “The consensus view still assumes\u00a0there will be some type of a d\u00e9tente formally reached within the next few days\u00a0between Washington and Tehran, which\u00a0means the real question is how much of this is already priced in?” wrote Adam Crisafulli of Vital Knowledge.<\/p>\n The S&P 500 climbed 0.9% last week to notch its longest weekly winning streak since late 2023. The Dow climbed 2.1%, marking its third weekly gain in four weeks. The Nasdaq rose 0.5% last week, its seventh in eight weeks.<\/p>\n “There is no doubt that fundamentals are at least partially responsible for the market rally,” wrote Adam Parker, founder of Trivariate Research. “With earnings projected to grow 23% this year, and 16% next year, there’s a credible argument to make that despite the increasing projections for earnings, and strong earnings growth, the price-to-forward earnings has been modestly contracting.”<\/p>\n A decline in oil prices also boosted equities last week. U.S. crude lost 8.4%, marking its worst week since April 17.<\/p>\n However, with crude still trading well above the levels seen earlier in the year \u2013 and price pressures remaining elevated \u2013 investor expectations for easier Federal Reserve policy have been tempered.
