This collapse could take centuries, but there is an imminent threat to Thwaites&#8217; eastern ice shelf, which will likely accelerate the glacier&#8217;s demise.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-f8a4fda5-a8e1-4e60-bed6-8f2122e8e008-2\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Researchers say that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/av.tib.eu\/media\/57379\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/av.tib.eu\/media\/57379\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">satellite images<\/a> reveal that the Thwaites eastern ice shelf is about to detach from the glacier, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2526826-the-doomsday-glaciers-giant-ice-shelf-is-about-to-break-away\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2526826-the-doomsday-glaciers-giant-ice-shelf-is-about-to-break-away\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">New Scientist<\/a> reported last week. While the glacier sits on land, the ice shelf is a floating body of ice that is attached to the glacier&#8217;s mouth. Researchers still have a lot to learn about the glacier, but this shelf acts as a buttress, restraining the flow of ice from the glacier into the sea.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-8dda5d3f-6da5-4812-a5c9-61f2e5598f0f\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bas.ac.uk\/profile\/rdla\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.bas.ac.uk\/profile\/rdla\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Robert Larter<\/a>, a marine geophysicist at the British Antarctic Survey, said that the ice shelf is very likely to break up in 2026. Larter runs the U.K. arm of the science coordination office at the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/thwaitesglacier.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/thwaitesglacier.org\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration<\/a>, where U.S and U.K. research agencies have investigated the glacier&#8217;s complex and rapidly changing environment<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">&#8220;The last bit of ice shelf in front of the glacier is poised to disintegrate,&#8221; Larter told Live Science in an interview. &#8220;We don&#8217;t know quite how this ice shelf is going to break up, but it&#8217;s definitely going to go.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Around the size of Florida, Thwaites Glacier is the largest glacier in West Antarctica. The gigantic river of ice is more than 6,500 feet (2,000 meters) thick in some parts and 75 miles (120 kilometers) across \u2014 making it Earth&#8217;s widest glacier.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The glacier has been <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/penguin-bones-reveal-secrets-of-ddomsday-glacier\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/penguin-bones-reveal-secrets-of-ddomsday-glacier\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/penguin-bones-reveal-secrets-of-ddomsday-glacier\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">melting rapidly since the 1980s<\/a>, losing hundreds of billions of tons of ice. That&#8217;s due to relatively warm ocean water <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/planet-earth\/climate-change\/warm-ocean-water-is-rushing-beneath-antarcticas-doomsday-glacier-making-its-collapse-more-likely\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/planet-earth\/climate-change\/warm-ocean-water-is-rushing-beneath-antarcticas-doomsday-glacier-making-its-collapse-more-likely\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/planet-earth\/climate-change\/warm-ocean-water-is-rushing-beneath-antarcticas-doomsday-glacier-making-its-collapse-more-likely\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flowing underneath the ice shelf<\/a> and melting the glacier at its base, where ice sits on ground that&#8217;s below sea level. Thwaites is a key pillar of the ice sheet, protecting other ice from slipping into the ocean. If the whole ice sheet were to go, sea levels would rise by 10.8 feet (3.3 m), according to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bas.ac.uk\/news\/grim-outlook-for-antarcticas-thwaites-glacier\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.bas.ac.uk\/news\/grim-outlook-for-antarcticas-thwaites-glacier\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">British Antarctic Survey<\/a>. Larter said that movement on the western side of the shelf, where the ice is breaking away, has approximately doubled over the last eight months.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Much like <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/planet-earth\/antarctica\/antarcticas-sudden-sea-ice-loss-is-one-of-the-most-extreme-and-confusing-events-in-the-modern-climate-record-scientists-now-know-why-its-happening\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/planet-earth\/antarctica\/antarcticas-sudden-sea-ice-loss-is-one-of-the-most-extreme-and-confusing-events-in-the-modern-climate-record-scientists-now-know-why-its-happening\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/planet-earth\/antarctica\/antarcticas-sudden-sea-ice-loss-is-one-of-the-most-extreme-and-confusing-events-in-the-modern-climate-record-scientists-now-know-why-its-happening\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">other Antarctic sea ice<\/a> \u2014 and the glacier itself \u2014 this shelf is undermined by warmer, saltier water being forced up from deep below the surface of the Southern Ocean.
