A temperature rise of more than 4 degrees Celsius (7.2 degrees Fahrenheit) by the end of the century would bring with it catastrophic consequences, including deadly <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/heat-and-drought\/t-19024671\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heat waves<\/a>, rising seas, crop failures and mass displacement.<\/p>\n<p>But a <a rel=\"noopener follow nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/gmd.copernicus.org\/articles\/19\/2627\/2026\/\" title=\"External link \u2014 scientific paper\">scientific paper<\/a> published in April\u00a0says that doomsday pathway \u2014 known as RCP8.5 and later SSP5-8.5 \u2014 is now less probable.\u00a0Designed as a benchmark to help governments prepare for <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/extreme-weather\/t-19020379\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dangerous possibilities<\/a>, the worst-case scenario was not a prediction.<\/p>\n<p>Climate researcher Detlef Van Vuuren, lead author of the new paper, told UK-based climate science platform\u00a0Carbon Brief that it had always been a &#8220;low-probability, high-risk scenario.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It reflected the knowledge and energy trends of the late 2000s, when the world was more reliant on burning planet-heating coal, oil and gas. <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/solar-is-winning-the-energy-race-clean-power-renewables\/a-76517556\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">But those trends have now changed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The world is not heading toward the worst-case scenario &#8220;because we&#8217;ve actually taken political measures allowing us to move away from that,&#8221;\u00a0French climate scientist Christophe Cassou told the AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<p><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"76979714\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/76979714_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"Windmills and solar panels in a field of sun-dried grass\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; max-height: 0;\"\/>The rapid growth of renewable energy is helping shift emissions trends away from the most dire heating scenarioImage: Caleb Jones\/AP Photo\/picture alliance<\/p>\n<p>The new assessment attributes the shift to <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/extreme-weather-and-green-energy-on-the-rise-in-europe\/a-76962870\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">renewable energy build-out<\/a> happening faster than expected, with many governments adopting policies that have slowed projected emissions growth.<\/p>\n<p>Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London, said the worst-case scenario had &#8220;assumed humanity would continue an unchecked coal-driven fossil fuel boom, which fortunately did not happen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While acknowledging that as &#8220;fundamentally good news,&#8221;\u00a0she urged that it &#8220;should by no means lead to complacency.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Climate skeptics seize on revised scenario\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump seized on the revision to claim climate scientists had been &#8220;wrong,&#8221;\u00a0fueling attacks on climate science from skeptics and politicians in both the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/can-the-us-renewables-sector-get-around-trump-and-replace-oil-coal-gas\/a-74882730\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United States<\/a>\u00a0and Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The far-right <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/elon-musk-and-germanys-far-right-share-complex-relationship\/a-68565717\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alternative for Germany<\/a>\u00a0is among them. The AfD used the new narrative to argue for a rollback of the country&#8217;s climate policies during a parliamentary debate on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Niklas H\u00f6hne, executive director and founder of Germany&#8217;s NewClimate Institute, described that play as\u00a0&#8220;a blatant diversionary tactic by climate deniers and the far right.&#8221;\u00a0As the world is in the thick of another energy crisis, he said fossil fuel defenders &#8220;will stop at nothing to fabricate a supposed scandal with outrageous arguments and divert attention from the real problems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"52065643\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/52065643_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"A woman holds a placard depicting Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and U.S President Donald Trump, with the words Hero under Thunberg and Zero under Trump\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; max-height: 0;\"\/>Debate over the revised climate scenario has intensified political divisions over how seriously governments should respond to global warmingImage: Imago Images\/ZUMA Press\/C. Minelli<\/p>\n<p>Cassou also said scientists &#8220;haven&#8217;t been alarmist at all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Besides scrapping the worst-case scenario, researchers have also abandoned their most optimistic climate pathway. They warn that the world is now likely to <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/emissions-gap-report-unep-global-temperature-climate-damage-paris-agreement-cop30-ndcs-co2\/a-74608409\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">temporarily exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius<\/a> of warming above pre-industrial levels \u2014 the threshold contained in the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/the-paris-climate-agreement-isnt-perfect-but-its-done-more-than-you-think\/a-74556928\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2015 Paris Agreement<\/a>, as a means of avoiding the worst climate impacts.<\/p>\n<p>The message now is clear. As <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/peak-oil-why-the-world-cant-break-its-fossil-fuel-habit\/a-75214502\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">emissions have not fallen fast enough<\/a>, despite years of warnings and climate pledges, the world could still warm by around 3 degrees Celsius by 2100.<\/p>\n<p>That would sharply intensify <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/el-nino-forest-fires-drought-extreme-weather-heat-climate\/a-77137100\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">climate impacts<\/a> already visible today, including increasing deadly heat waves, floods, storms and droughts. It would also imply widespread crop failures and <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/the-sea-that-is-vanishing-in-real-time\/a-76813409\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sea-level rise<\/a>\u00a0affecting as many as 600 million people \u2014\u00a0all with widespread consequences on <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/climate-change-india-harvest-festival-crops-extreme-weather-global-food-security\/a-76821351\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">food security<\/a>, economies and human health.<\/p>\n<p>UN climate resolution faces resistance\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the United Nations General Assembly has approved a nonbinding resolution reinforcing countries&#8217; obligations to combat climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The UN body voted overwhelmingly in favor of endorsing the advisory opinion issued last year by the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/icj-ruling-makes-national-climate-inaction-a-little-harder\/a-73373617\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Court of Justice<\/a>.
