Nvidia (NVDA, Financials) is putting billions of dollars behind photonics, a technology that could help solve one of the biggest problems in AI infrastructure: moving huge amounts of data without using too much power.<\/p>\n
Since March, Nvidia has committed at least $6.5 billion to companies working on photonics, including Lumentum, Coherent, Marvell and Corning. The company also joined a funding round for optics startup Ayer Labs.<\/p>\n
Photonics uses light instead of electrical signals to move data. That matters because AI data centers need to connect massive numbers of chips, servers and systems. Copper wiring still works, but it can become expensive and power-hungry as AI workloads grow.<\/p>\n
For Nvidia, the goal is simple. If AI keeps scaling, the infrastructure around its chips has to scale too.<\/p>\n
CEO Jensen Huang has said the world does not yet have enough silicon photonics capacity to meet future demand. That explains why Nvidia is investing early in the supply chain.<\/p>\n
For investors, photonics could become an important part of Nvidia’s next growth phase. It may also benefit suppliers that provide optical components and networking technology.<\/p>\n
