When MH reached out to several therapists and psychologists, they all had similar concerns.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cI think the biggest thing is men are socialized not to show anxiety,\u201d says <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/profiles\/carmen-mclean\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/profiles\/carmen-mclean\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Carmen McLean, PhD\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">Carmen McLean, PhD<\/a>, a psychologist at Stanford Medicine. \u201cSocializing to show agency and self-efficiency dissuades from showing anxiety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Studies continuously show that women are more likely than men to be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Still, that doesn\u2019t mean men are immune to anxiety. Since most American boys grow up with a \u201ctoughen up\u201d mentality, experts say men are more likely to exhibit anxious feelings in \u201cmore masculine\u201d ways.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Now some anxiety symptoms\u2014nervousness, dread over impending danger, and rapid breathing\u2014are still common across gender lines. Hofmann, PhD<\/a>, psychology professor at Boston University and one of the leading researchers on anxiety treatments. \u201cThe male is the one who is expected to take the first step. That puts them in a performance situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">There\u2019s also the looming risk of rejection. In people with social anxiety disorder, the anxiety over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/sex-women\/a25560707\/what-is-ghosting\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/sex-women\/a25560707\/what-is-ghosting\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"getting ghosted\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">getting ghosted<\/a> is enough to deter them from putting themselves out there in the first place. \u201cIt\u2019s a challenge for people who don\u2019t like to play that game,\u201dadds Hofmann.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The cruel irony is that most guys with social anxiety want to be in a relationship. Therapist <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.davidezell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.davidezell.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"David Ezell\" data-node-id=\"11.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">David Ezell<\/a>, founder of Darien Wellness, explains that some agonize over being chronically single. \u201cMen really benefit from marriage,\u201d Ezell explains. \u201cThey\u2019re less likely to be sick. They\u2019re less likely to be hospitalized. They\u2019re hospitalized for shorter stays if they are hospitalized.\u201d To many men, Ezell adds marriage is a desired status. It implies maturation into being a man.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Beyond seeing a therapist for help, one common advice is to schedule one-hour <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/learn-from-us\/from-the-experts\/blog-posts\/consumer\/dating-anxiety\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/learn-from-us\/from-the-experts\/blog-posts\/consumer\/dating-anxiety\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"practice coffee date\" data-node-id=\"12.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">practice coffee date<\/a>. Like with preparing for a job interview, there should be zero expectations with the date. It may even help to tell yourself you\u2019re never going to see this person again to keep it low-stakes. On the date, stay curious about the person and attentive to both their reactions and your own.<\/p>\n<p>Finding Any Excuse to Drink<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">ALCOHOL IS ONE of the most popular choices for guys internalizing their anxiety. Here\u2019s why.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">With one or two drinks, alcohol acts as a short-term anxiolytic by increasing the release of a brain chemical called GABA. An increase in GABA can slow down brain activity and temporarily cause a state of relaxation. In other words, it can loosen someone up.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cThey are looking for medication,\u201d says Ezell. The study researchers theorized the heavy drinking may have developed as a maladaptive coping mechanism to relieve their anxiety. In fact, it\u2019s been found that people with anxiety disorders are <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/acer.15036\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/acer.15036\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"more likely to develop signs of alcohol use disorder\" data-node-id=\"19.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">more likely to develop signs of alcohol use disorder<\/a> like uncontrolled drinking and a constant need to drink compared to people without anxiety who consume alcohol at the same level.<\/p>\n<p>Often Turning to Anger as a First Reaction<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">IN SOME MEN, anxiety may manifest as rage or anger. McLean says that culturally, a man getting angry is a more acceptable response than acknowledging anxiety.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">One <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/mhanational.org\/resources\/dealing-with-anger-and-frustration\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/mhanational.org\/resources\/dealing-with-anger-and-frustration\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"poll\" data-node-id=\"22.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">poll<\/a> of people with anxiety found 71 percent felt \u201ceasily annoyed or irritable at least half of the time or nearly everyday.\u201d Another found that 91 percent were more likely to express their anger on social media rather than face-to-face.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">While women may find support from friends or mental health professionals, guys often let their feelings of fear and worry build up until they hit a breaking point. Then the flood gates open.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cBecause emotions don\u2019t get expressed [by men], anxiety isn\u2019t expressed in a healthy way, there are busts of anger as a result,\u201d says Ezell. \u201cI think anger is considered decisive.\u201d Understanding the root of anger as anxiety-based is an important step with finding help. Clinical trial <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0887618521001092\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0887618521001092\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"data\" data-node-id=\"24.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">data<\/a> on anxious people has shown significantly less anger when they receive anxiety treatment.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">To stop turning your anxiety into anger, therapists recommend to pause before reacting. That can mean taking several deep breaths or counting to ten in your head. This can help with emotionally distancing yourself from the problem, giving your mind to react more appropriately. To release anxiety and frustration, exercise (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a19530875\/weight-training-reduces-anxiety\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a19530875\/weight-training-reduces-anxiety\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"specifically strength training\" data-node-id=\"25.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">specifically strength training<\/a>) can also help with releasing pent-up emotions.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy Reliance on Their Partner for Emotional Support<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">THERE IS A <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory.pdf\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"loneliness epidemic\" data-node-id=\"27.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">loneliness epidemic<\/a>, especially among men. With only <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americansurveycenter.org\/why-mens-social-circles-are-shrinking\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.americansurveycenter.org\/why-mens-social-circles-are-shrinking\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"27 percent of men\" data-node-id=\"27.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">27 percent of men<\/a> having six or more close friends, therapists are seeing a common pattern\u2014a heavy emotional dependence on female friends and romantic partners. Prior generations sought comfort in an entire network of family and friends.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">However, with less confidantes to provide support through emotional distress, anxious men might burn out their few outlets (or only outlet) for social support quickly.<\/p>\n<p>An Obsession With Status<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"32\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">EZELL\u2019S PRACTICE IS located in Darien, Connecticut, a community often filled with hedge fund managers and Wall Street executives. With a median family income of over $230,000, <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/datausa.io\/profile\/geo\/darien-ct\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/datausa.io\/profile\/geo\/darien-ct\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"it&#039;s frequently named\" data-node-id=\"32.2\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">it&#8217;s frequently named<\/a> one of the wealthiest municipalities in the United States.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Despite their financial success, Ezell has clients who are riddled with anxiety over what they haven\u2019t accomplished. \u201cMy clients make a lot of money,\u201d said Ezell. \u201cThey are still not happy and want to know why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"34\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Guys are often anxious about getting ahead of peers, he said. If a friend winters in Aspen, his client wants to winter in the Alps. There is a particular pressure in status attainment\u2014and status advancement\u2014that fuels anxiety disorders for many.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"35\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cWe are very grateful by getting things,\u201d Ezell said, \u201cbut we get acclimated to that status very quickly.
