More than one million New Zealanders have rolled up their sleeves for a flu vaccination as the country heads into winter, according to Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora. <\/p>\n
The milestone comes just days before winter officially begins on June 1, with those who had not yet been vaccinated encouraged to book an appointment.<\/p>\n
Nikki Canter-Burgoyne, Health\u00a0NZ\u00a0Director\u00a0for\u00a0Prevention\u00a0Immunisations, said reaching one million vaccinations was a “fantastic achievement”. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt shows the strong commitment of people to protect themselves, their families, and the wider community from the flu,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Canter-Burgoyne warned winter was only just beginning and influenza could still have a serious impact, particularly on vulnerable people.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile for many people influenza can be a mild illness, for some people it can cause serious illness and hospitalisation,” she said. <\/p>\n
“The protection that the flu vaccine provides reduces the risk of complications.\u201d <\/p>\n
Health New Zealand was urging anyone who had not received a flu vaccination to do so now. <\/p>\n
“Now is the time\u00a0to\u00a0make an\u00a0appointment\u00a0with your GP or health care provider. There are many pharmacies across the country that offer\u00a0a\u00a0walk in\u00a0service,” Canter-Burgoyne said. <\/p>\n
People were also encouraged to ensure they were up to date with other recommended immunisations, including Covid-19, pertussis (whooping cough)\u00a0and measles.\u00a0<\/p>\n
